Please do not reproduce for profit without my consent. You won't be getting
much profit anyway, but that's not the point. This took time and effort, and
I just wanted to write for a console RPG--one of the last remaining few
English ones not covered--as I'd never really done that before, and I hadn't
created maps for a while. Please send me an email referring to me and this
guide by name if you'd like to post it on your site.

I also have maps for this game at www.gamefaqs.com.

================================

  1. INTRODUCTION

Knight's Quest is a very cookie-cutter RPG for the GameBoy. In it, you play a
14-year-old named Will who goes in search of fame and fortune and other good
hackneyed stuff. The quest progression is very linear, the combat system is
simplistic a la Dragon Warrior, and you also have a similar no-lose situation
even when you die(penalty of half your gold lost,) but it gets tedious.

Fortunately with the advent of emulation you are able to breeze through the
boring parts(ie the combat that shows off the stultifying animation that
makes a hit for 5 points of damage seem much more interesting than it is) and
once you figure which attack works on which monsters, it's a dungeon crawler
of maybe 30 16x16 screens. What originality there is mainly relates to bad
translations, and what mystical qualities the game has revolve mostly around
your not quite having enough information to figure something out, or your
realizing that there are at most three places to look to find where your next
quest is.

There are some minor mapping puzzles but the bafflers take up more time--ie X
claimed he was about to take a dragon, and you killed X, and now you need to
get the dragon--off in a COMPLETELY different direction. The special
items(key and axe and such) are over-generic and that's probably partially
due to the GameBoy limitations.

Still this game is a neat exercise in quick character-building and map-
writing and I hope my guide shows how to put the game to the sword quickly.
For me, this was the first non-franchise console RPG I tackled and for some
reason I'd always been intimidated, but I often forget that consoles can't
hold PC's memories, or couldn't way back when. In general there is no way to
really take a step backwards unless you have a L3 sword and buy a L1. It's a
safe game but sadly it never really sparkles.

  2. CONTROLS

    2-1. BASICS

The directions work as you expect they would, although if you run halfway
into a tree, you won't run around it. Up/down override left/right so if you
need to make it somewhere diagonally, you can work that(ie hold left, tap up
a bunch) though you can't make direct diagonal moves. There's no button for
using special items, and you just have to walk over houses to enter.

A note about switching screens: you tend to reappear in the exact center, and
since screens are 16x16, that puts you between icons, so you will wind up
running into a half-a-tree and stopping even if you try to pre-walk and avoid
it.

Start shows your place on the map. There aren't that many places to go, so
you should have a rough idea, but it's nice just in case.

Select shows your status, i.e. experience, HP, tools, weapon and items. At
this screen you can also scroll left and right and push A to use a healing
item. Push select again to go back to main game play. You can scroll from one
edge to another if you want. There's no way or need to drop an item. You only
have the axe, the key and the hammer as tools, and these are used
automatically.

Combat is pretty self explanatory too. You have:

Fight Magic(use offensive magic)

Escape Medi(use healing)
(Try to flee, opponent gets free hit on fail)

Fight leads to the menu:

Swallow Falcon
Sea Gull Eagle

Button A selects, button B backs out to the previous menu.

Each monster type is vulnerable to one of these attacks and variably
vulnerable to others. The variability itself can vary. For instance, Goblins
are vulnerable to Falcon, which can do 100+ damage, but other types do only
10. On the flip side, Dark Shadows are completely even, but they are a
rarity. Many monsters suffer 3/4 or 1/2 damage with other attacks, but in
general with new monsters, you should expect to have one attack that does
damage consistent with the maximum damage you inflict on other monsters.

    2-2. SPEEDING IT UP

If you are playing this game on VisualBoyAdvance, the space bar helps you
speed things up. Like combat. What's extra cool is that you can push the
arrows and A and B buttons to whip through combat, too. Combat is a
bottleneck in this game and once it goes 40 times faster, you can just watch
your guy inflict huge damage and win easily. Then you can break the game down
conceptually into the appropriate puzzles.

Note that with save states it is also pretty easy to find each monster's
weakness. Save, try 1 attack, check damage, reload, repeat three times and
see what did the most damage. If you're confused, try again. It requires a
little practice not to flee when you want to perform a seagull attack, but
you will get the hang of it before you get to level 4.

The one drawback to this is that once you get on a roll you forget to look at
your hit points.

    2-3. AVOIDING OR FINDING ENEMIES

In general you shouldn't be worried about enemies in an area where you're not
over your head, unless they have 3x your current hit points. Once you know
what damages them, hit them with it mercilessly and you should be OK. This
goes double when you have gotten a new armor from an area further in the game
than where you are. If you take armor to a place you already solved, you take
almost no damage.

Clumps of enemies however are to be avoided and thankfully they move
predictably enough that you can avoid them when you need. Be careful, though,
as if you just wing an enemy, that is enough for them to attack you. Also do
not fall into the trap of "oh, I usually get to gofirst andI can take them in
one hit so my one HP is no big deal." Surprise attacks are common enough.

There are three wide sorts of enemies in Knight's Quest: blobs, fighters and
airborne. You can outrun them all, so you can dictate who to fight outside of
the narrowest corridors. Blobs move slowly but can be a bit more dangerous
than fighters. Blobs also move more randomly and slowly while fighters seem
to be more fixed, only turning around when they hit a wall. However, blobs
turn more slowly. Both of these enemy types only change direction when in the
middle of a tile of game background. Airborne enemies, unlike the other two,
can fly through areas you can't walk, even going diagonally, and if you wait
around they'll eventually get you. Good if you're level building, bad if your
HP is low.

You can of course pause the game if you get to a difficult area, and remember
that if you leave and return to an area, monsters will come back.

But to avoid airborne enemies, feint one way and then run the other. Again,
you can speed things up with [space] so this is less tedious. For ground
enemies, stand diagonally to them and see which way they go and then run
around them. If enemies are in a lump together(they can run through each
other) you need to stay back and let them shuffle out.

Couple this with the ability to speed things up on VisualBoyAdvance with the
space bar and you get the following: you can sit around and wait for some
airborne monsters to get you pretty quickly. Or you can run after ground
monsters near an exit and beat them up and return. Just be sure to leave when
you have 1/4 of your hit points or more.

One other thing to remember is that you will want to use a heart too early
rather than too late. Using it in a tough combat basically gives the enemy a
free move.

  3. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

The first thing to note is that you start with 200 gold, your first big magic
item costs 280, and you lose half your gold when you die. So dying early on
is very bad and you should take extra pains to avoid it. Fortunately it's not
too bad to inch back and forth to start and get a few levels, after which you
can whomp basic monsters without significant damage to yourself.

In general you have plenty of places to bash around and gain experience and
gold--you'll wind up with more gold than you really need--and it's more
important to be able to recall what attacks to use on monsters than to be
super-leveled-up. Though leveling up can save you if you make a mistake.

Also given that your damage increases with your level to ridiculous
proportions, a few levels can make the difference between struggling through
an area and wiping it out quickly. Another thing about damage is that while
it is random, the variation is not so great, so there will be monsters you
hit twice and they wind up with six hit points and one last attack on you--at
least until you get to the next level. Then the monsters change. When that's
over, you have to face the big monsters.

Still beyond the start there is a question of what to do.

    3-1. LEVEL CHART

Level| Exp | HP
-----+-----+----
1 | 0 | 20
2 | 9 | 24
3 | 29 | 32

27 |7739 |742
28 |8209 |796
29 |8679 |854
30 |9149

Note after a while the level experience needed goes up linearly but the hit
points go up at an x-squared rate. Couple that with the damage and you can
see one level makes a big difference.

    3-2. ITEMS AND SUCH

Your first priority should be L2 armor, which allows you to bash around the
entry areas while taking very little damage, then a L2 sword. These are both
in the southeast of town, the west part of the pair of shops. Once you have
the sword, you can really hack up the better monsters. Eventually in the
tougher quests you need to buy up a bunch of hearts. However, you don't want
to use them until you have used up access to an inn. There are many inns
along the way, and they are cheap, and you can clear out an area and then
rest in the inn.

Hearts are in King's Palace Town(00), east shop. Price=160 to heal 150
Potions are many places. Price=20 to heal 20
Potion2s are many places. Price=60 to heal 50
L2 armor is in King's Palace Town(00). Price=280
L2 sword is in King's Palace Town(00). Price=300
L3 armor is in West Town (20). Price=520
L3 sword is in Harbor Town (31). Price=560
L4 armor is in the Secret Island. Price=??
L4 sword is in the Dark Lord Mountains. Price=??

Offensive:
Star(12) in KPT
Scroll(28) in Harbor Town
Lightning(36) in Harbor Town
Fang(44) in KPT
Crystal(164) in Harbor Town

Potion2s aren't worth it except maybe to buy one or two for the north cave,
because by the time you get through the north cave, you should have ~150 hit
points.

I never found much use for the offensive magic weapons, though the crystals
in Harbor Town can be handy. Also note that because hearts are only in King's
Palace Town, you need to stock up on them for the treks across the game
world.

Sometimes I only take seven hearts along, or even five, because I know there
is going to be a potion you can use. If I really want cheap healing in the
middle of a quest(keep in mind that winning a quest that kicks you back to
the castle recharges ALL your hit points) then I navigate the Woods of Loss
detailed in 6-8. There's an enclave with two potion2's and a potion.

    3-3. ACHIEVING EXPEDIENT BALANCE

The number one rule: when in doubt, splurge on the nearby inn. Ten gold
pieces vs. half your gold pieces and a kick back to the start is no contest.
Also, avoid monsters guarding the actual quest areas if you can. You'll want
to save your energy for the final fight. It's easy to get caught up in
bashing around and while there's no set level you NEED to solve a certain
quest, having more levels can make it easier. I find that I needed level 6 to
start on the first quest, and then I took a couple levels before going on
each next quest, where I got another level or two along the way. There are
plenty of ways to avoid combat and I've shown them above. In general your
leveling up should be heavily skewed towards bashing around inns, leaving the
scene, and coming back.

Early on your goal should be to get the L2 armor and sword.

By the end of the game, gold shouldn't be a problem. You should have some
marginal monsters you can beat that give 20 experience. So after 25 fights,
or fewer, you will get another level. You can just stay around an inn and
leave and recharge a lot. Don't overdo the level building in this game, but
if you are 100 points from the next level, you might as well work up to the
level and then hit an inn before trying your next run.

As you improve in levels, you will need to find a new place that gives better
experience where you can still beat monsters easily. It's useful to find
certain places with monsters you can beat handily before you walk off the
screen and come back and beat the monsters again. Or other places where you
can walk out of a bit

  4. BESTIARY

"Bleebs" are seen also in Phantasie, but I doubt the name was pulled from
there. Note similarly named monsters have similar weaknesses.

You start out in the castle. The king gives you a quest and 200 gold. You
only have 20 hit points, though, to start. Watch it closely early on because
dying means you'll lose 100 gold or more. Shops in the SE: the east one has
hearts and the west one has L2 Armor and a Sword. Don't buy anything right
away. The house in the NE gives tips relevant to your quest, as well as in
the SW. They change with each boss you defeat. There's an inn in the NW
you'll get to know well.

Because a Terror Fly guards the area to the left(165 HP) you'll want to go up
off the screen to start, to the North Woods. This is an easy place to gain
experience: attack the green slime(falcon/eagle,) kill it and run back. Then
run back onto the screen. If you do this nine times, you get a level. You can
also wait around for imps to attack you(falcon) and they help you level up
more quickly since they give 2 experience instead of 1. Both are likely to
hit you twice. But avoid the Mush Boy in the NW until level 3.

Be careful, though. If your hit points get to or below 5, return down and go
to the NW building, an inn where you can recharge hit points for 10 GP. Also
note that if you get a level, current HP don't go up. So there's only so much
use trying to stretch things out to get a few extra hit points next time you
visit the inn. Don't worry about maximizing profits or if you give too much
money to the inn. Even in the VERY unlikely situation you lose gold on a
trip, you'll eventually gain it back. Then by the time you get to level 3 you
can take out many more enemies with one blow.

You can keep fighting the slime 25-30 times and healing when necessary. When
your gold gets to 280, go to the left building in the DR and get level 2
armor. You should be at level 3 for your character now, at least, so you can
do a bit more damage with your sword. Also, with the armor, you can hack
through more enemies more quickly.

Keep beating them up until you get to 300 gold, then buy the level 2 sword.
You can of course hang around the bottom of the north woods and beat up a
slime, but that may get tedious. If you are playing on an emulator you can
just beat up the slime, wait, let imps attack you and then retreat etc. That
gets you three fights in a row, speeding things up. Eveh on level 2 you can
beat up imps with falcon with one blow and so you can just alternate between
screens and hold down the space bar to get a bunch of quick fights.

Now you may want to go to the next scene up from the North Woods entry. (02)
It has a house in the right, a grey ooze guarding the left, and a bridge to
the north. A goblin guards the land past the bridge and you can walk around
him if you want, but the monsters above may be too tough til you get to level
4-5. At any rate, it is not as efficient to crawl through the mountain pass
as to wait around in the woods if you are building experience. Once you have
the L2 sword and are level 7, you can go on the big quest.

On the next screen up (03) a hobgoblin guards the cave to the north. Walk
around him to save hit points, or falcon him. You can probably avoid all the
monsters here, as there aren't even good monsters to beat up repeatedly.

    6-2. THE NORTH CAVE

First of all, you only need enough strength to get to the Goblin King, not
necessarily to return. So you can just leg the last bit out. You don't even
need any healing potions for this, really.

(04) A goblin guards the entrance, then grey ooze. Then up, left down and you
face a Sharp Head. Swallow should take it out. This is the first guy you
really need a good level to defeat. A sky ball is in the dead end below, then
you head left and can go up/down. Turns out each leads to near the exit, but
up is quicker. You may encounter a bleeb here. Use swallow. A slug guards the
passage to (05) and falcon should beat it.

(05) This level winds east and north so just follow the passage. It's
possible to walk around the first guard, a hobgoblin. Eagle works well as
does falcon. A sky ball may fly around too. Then there is a bleeb.

Past that should be a side road up, but it leads to a dead end with a
campfire and a slug. Then a sharp head. You may run into your first harpy,
too.

(06) The extreme left leads to a slug and dead end. So you may want to go up
and kill the harpy and sharp head. Then you go to the NE and back S W N.
Eagle the Hobgoblin and take out the other hobgoblin to the side if you want.
Swallow the Goblin King, who is just sitting there at the head of the fires.

Bam! Back to the throne room. The king tells you about a new tower that has
shot up. Buy a couple hearts before tackling this one, if you can. You should
have a good chunk of gold just from the fights to get to the cave. Mess
around a bit to get enough for two, if you don't have it. The bottom areas
will be very easy.

    6-3. THE NORTH CAPE

If you come here before you finish the cave, there will be nothing on the
northern shore.

(12) You can go west from the SW part of 02 to get to the North Cape. The
monsters here are pretty tough, but not impossible. Scorpions, Orcs, Giant
Imps and Little Mages. You will also see a tower to the north and a home to
the east complaining the tower wasn't there before. Falcon seems to work well
on them all. You can't do anything in the tower yet, as the doors to the
stairs are locked.

Fortunately the key is just over to the west. (22) Cape's Forest is where you
will find a key for the tower. It has some orcs and little mages but nothing
really to be worried about. W and S you have a house. There you can go right,
then 3R 2U into the wood--you can walk through some of the trees. Fight a
scorpion, then 2L 2U 2R and fight a big scorpio(sic) and 2R 4D and there's
the key. If you fight and return later you will see a potion there, but it is
too awkward to run around here to pile up experience. There are a lot quicker
ways to do it. So go back east to (12). If you have a lot of gold, you may
wish to buy hearts right away.

Now you may wish to build up to level 11 when 1W of the castle before
proceeding. Lots of experience there and easy to heal. You also may wish to
buy hearts with the money that goes with your experience as there are no
magic weapon power-ups in your immediate future.

(e3) Go up the stairs and you'll see cracks which cause you to fall down. If
you wander around(well, just go south and east a bit actually) you'll see
stairs guarded by cracks. And if you were observant in e2 you may have
noticed stairs at the very top. The right cracks will drop you into that
area. Now the levels are aligned so that a crack X east and Y north of stairs
above drop you X east and Y north of stairs below. And the restricted area is
to the right of the stairs you can't get to. So look for something directly
west/east of the stairs that are guarded. The cracks right around lead you to
the NE, where you came. So you need to go a little more east. The right crack
is flanked by pillars as follows:

Dads(swallow) and Dragonnes(seagull) guard this and in the SW, before the

is rebuilding the bridge. This was just a chat before but now he asks you to
cut down a cedar. Deal with that later. A Great Bleeb(Sea Gull) is at the
top. It is guarding the broken tree, which looks different from the others,
in the NW. Ivan gives you his axe. It is a tool, not a weapon. No, I'm not

^ Harbor town is to the North

  ^ Inn 10 gold

^ shop potion potion2 thunder scroll
^ "Tabasa? She lives south of this town"
^ "Tabasa is leaving for the Harbor Town"

With the inn and the monsters, this is a very good place to fight tougher
monsters and recharge if you want to go up a level. Now you can go south,
just to verify that she indeed left for the Harbor Town, or you can go north.
The first way gets you some experience and seems to trip a flag without which
you don't get another message at Harbor Town, which trips the gate to the
cemetery.

(31) Harbor Town: a Jelly Fish is waiting for you. You really have to fight

There's another great bleeb to the east. Note the potion NE of town behind
the trees. And let's see what's in town now.

doesn't recharge monsters.

With level 3 armor, enemies like the Big Beetle, which give good experience,
won't be able to damage you.

(43) More undead nasties. In the SW, a shop sells a level 3 sword for 560.
This is not such a great deal as it would seem if you are low on cash, as you
can get through this mess without it, and not buying one saves money for
later. Buying one now probably saves a heart or two--160 or 320 gold.

    6-6. HAUNTED MANSION

    6-8. THE DARK LORD

So you'd think that the dragon Shade left behind that Will talks about is

If you came here before, you'd note they have unlimited healing items each
time you retreat and re-enter(2 potion-2, 1 potion) and you only have to
fight a dragonne and big beetle--and that's only if you can't avoid them.
They're not quite hearts, but they'll do the job in a pinch if you're
drained. You just have to go right from where you entered, then you'll see
the big bridge.

But afterwards, note that the dragon is right there. Approach from above to
get some healing potions if you have the inventory space, then take the
dragon. The Giant Lord that appears is tough looking, but just hit him with
Falcon. Then you go to the Dark Lord's Mountains. There's some good stuff
here: 1D to an inn, 1U1R to a store that sells a L4 Sword. You should have
the cash. You can buy hearts too at 1U and crystals 1L 1D. This is all pretty
self-contained and I think you should be able to plow through here without
too much trouble. If you don't have enough cash for the L4 sword, you can
fight all the enemies. Keep staying at the inn, go off the board and come
back to get through the tough fights. They'll get easier and you will be able
to buy the sword eventually. Use the inn to heal as it is much cheaper than
hearts. I would also recommend buying a potion for if you get in a pinch,
because buying a heart to heal could eat up your profits if you can't make it
out and back. Also, feel free at least the first few times to rush back to
the inn before exiting the (dl1) screen. It's a good time to be careful, and
the payoff will be 1200 hit points. You may need every one even if you walk
through the final castle accurately.

(dl1) You'll have some tough monsters to face. Dark Beetles and Flying Rocks
and a Giant Fly(all Eagle) but you can go back to the inn and heal before
moving to the next screen. It's winding but one-way.

(dl2) This level scrolls, so be careful. Right, and now you have a choice.
Fortunately further right is a dead end, so up and left. More enemies to
Eagle theough the Giant Lord is more susceptible to Falcon. Now you'll enter
a room with 4 exits. SE is a dead end. NE leads to another room(the side path
S leads back where you were.) There may be a Melty above--Falcon him. West
and east link to each other, so go up.

(dl3) Now a bridge. Giant Lord on the right, Melty on the left. Take the Lord
quickly. Flying Rock on the left above, Fire Life on the right(swallow.)
Enter the gaping maw.

Note that if you fall down you should be able to move back to the start and
try over again. But there are a lot of tough monsters and a lot of dead ends.
Still the right solution is pretty quick once you know it.

(dl4) Now you are in the Dark Lord's Castle. Metal Hand(swallow,) Fire
Dragon, Axe Armor, Axe Master(Eagle) are all enemies as are Blacks( ). You
should only have to face a Fire Life. Go east north west north.

You may drop down a sinkhole by mistake so the text map below should help you
out:

(dl6) 1S 4E and south. Circle around some more. There are a few more
sinkholes to avoid, then a Minotaur and a skulking Axe Master. Boy, these
guys leave a lot of gold. So at least if you get killed you can stock up for
the rematch. Stairs are beyond and they lead to the very top.

(dl7) Heal up. The Dark Lord is directly north and six hits with swallow
should do for him. At level 23 I needed to burn 400 HP. If you are at level
30 it should be a TKO.

    6-9. LEVELS ~ QUESTS

This is a guide to the minimum level needed to solve which quests. In case
one area seems to be tripping you up. You may want to be a bit above to have
a buffer against monsters you forget how to attack. I had the fortune(?) of
playing this a few times in a row so I remembered.

At level 3/4 you can get the armor L2.
At level 6 you can get the sword L2 and clear out the North Cave, probably
picking up another level or two on the way.
At level 8 you can get the key west of the tower and return.
At level 9 you can go back and clear the tower.
At level 10 you can chop the tree in the NW of the woods west of the castle.
At level 11 you can see Tabasa's house.
At level 12 you can get through the pass to Harbor Town and L3 Armor, where
you can learn Tabasa went to the mansion, and you can get the L3 armor when
you fight off the Great Bleebs.
At level 14 you should be able to go into the cemetery.
At level 15 you can pass the mansion, if you have a few hearts.
At level 16 it is possible to get the hammer.
At level 18 you can beat Shade after going to the secret cave behind the
rocks in the north cave, but it is finely balanced. You will want to fight
monsters to get the L4 Armor first.
At level 19 you should be able to go to the Woods of Loss, ride on the
Dragon, and get to the Dark Lord's realm where you will want to accumulate
eight hearts after buying a level 4 sword.
At level 23 you can win the game. You will probably pick up 3 levels while
building up your inventory and bashing through monsters to get to the Dark
Lord anyway.

  7. VERSIONS

1.0.0: submitted to GameFAQs 3/1/2007. Complete. Maps complete as well.

  8. CREDITS

Thanks to the usual and former GameFAQs gang. They know who they are, and you
should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done. Good people too-
-bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow Dragon/Brui5ed Ego,
ZoopSoul, War Doc, AdamL and others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in his
current not-yet-banned message board incarnation.
Thanks to the NES Completion Project folks for all their work, too, and for
the spinoff GB/GBC efforts. Helps keep me inspired. In this case I started
looking for the last game in the Genre and this one spilled out nicely.
