Welcome to the Shenmue slot machine FAQ. Are you having problems getting
all of the figures and collectibles from the tedious slot machine game?
If so then this FAQ may help you. You will find out where the machines
are located, what you have to do, and how to fully master them.

=========================================================================
 3. THE GUIDE
=========================================================================

You can play on the slot machines at the slot house near the Heartbeats
Bar and to the right of "Snack Linda" in Dobuita. It opens at 10:00 AM
and closes at 12:00 AM. Once in there you will see quite a number of
slot machines, 16 in fact.

1-6: 1 coin bet machine

7-10: 5 coin bet machine

11-14: 10 coin bet machine

15-16: 20 coin bet machine

You can tell what number a machine is by looking under the controls of
the slot machine, you can't miss it. The only reason for the numbers on
each machine is to do with the Lapis Fortune Teller but I'll tell you
more about that later.

When you go to a machine for the first time, you will have to deposit
some of your hard-earned yen. I recommend doing 1000 yen (maximum). Then
the main slot machine screen will come up...

|PAY OUT| |BET| |START| |
|_____________________|____|

PAY OUT - All the SEGA credits in the credit LED screen will pay out into
the cash collector thing for you to pick up. This option is useless and
just to make the game more realistic, if you just press B to get out of
the slot machine screen it will pay out automatically. You don't even see
it pay out either, it just goes straight into Ryo's SEGA credit
collection.

BET - This bets an amount of money, which depends on what machine you are
on (1 coin machine, it bets 1 coin each time). It takes money from your
main credit value which is shown in the credit LED screen on the slot
machine. You can bet 5 times and each time you do it it enables a line.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th are the lines, if you only bet one line (1st)
then you will only be paid if you get something on that line.

For example, if you get three sevens on the 1st line you will be paid out
the money due. But if the sevens are on another line then you won't get
anything if you didn't bet on it. So to increase your chances of hitting
the jackpot you should bet on all 5 lines. But you should start off only
doing this on the lower coin machines, if you start betting on all 5
lines on the 20 coin machine with only 1000 credits your money will be
gone fast. When you have a lot of a credits, around 8000 then you should
starting betting more lines on the higher machines.

START - Starts the slot machine, duh.

LEVER - Again, another option to make the game more realistic. If for
some reason you don't feel like pressing "start" then move Ryo's hand to
the right of that option to come to the lever. He will pull it in true
casino fashion. Great.

So that's how you play the slot machine, you will soon be addicted! Now
an explanation of the SEGA credits.

In this slot house you don't gamble for money but for SEGA credits. At
first you do put some real money into the machine, which it turns into
credits. The idea is to build up these credits. If your credits go back
to zero then you will have to put some more real money in.

But what do you do with these SEGA credits? Not much, you only use them
to bet. However, you will win a prize if you get 10,000 or more credits
then another prize when you get 50,000 or more.

+----------------------------------------------+
| NAME OF PRIZE |AMOUNT OF CREDITS NEEDED|
|---------------------|------------------------|
|Matsuyama Certificate| 10,000 |
|---------------------|------------------------|
|Mitsuka Certificate | 50,000 |
+----------------------------------------------+

The main good thing about the slot machines is that you can win a prize
if you get three sevens in a row of the same colour. The prize you win
is different depending on what type of coin machine your playing on.

+----------------------------------------------+
| NAME OF PRIZE | TYPE OF COIN MACHINE |

|Cherries | 1 Coin |

Stupid collectable items you say? No way! These special collectable items
can be traded online on the Shenmue Passport disc at the "Everyone's
Space section. Sadly, they are not traded with other online players but
with a computer. The items listed above are traded for more collectable
items. It may be worthless at the moment, but apparently we will be able
to upload our Shenmue saves to Shenmue II so we can keep all the stuff
we collected! So make sure you get them all. Here is the list of items
you can trade for online...

Here is a routine that I used to get all the figures listed above.

8:30AM: Woke up after a long night of Space Harrier...my head hurts...
Save your game. Make your way to the dojo and fight Fuka-San
(if you can), as nothing much opens until 10AM.

9:00AM: Make your way to Dobuita, check the Tomato Mart for any new
tapes if you still need some. Run around a bit, kill some time
        until 10AM.

10:00AM: Run into the Lapis Fortune Teller place straight away! After
selecting yes to have your fortune told (left option) some
more options will come up. Select the one on the right, make
sure you have subtitles on if you can't understand Japanese as
you will need to read the number she gives out (luckily Japanese
don't use Kanji for numbers any more). Remember the number she
gives you and run to the slot machines!

10:20AM: Go to the machine with the number she gave you on. Start
betting! If it is a 1, 5, 10 coin machine I recommend maybe
doing all five lines. If it is a 20 coin machine, maybe only
do three a time. It really depends on how much money you have.

10:20AM Onwards...: Just keep on betting until you get three sevens of
the same colour. When you do the alarm thing on top of the
machine will go off and the man who owns the place will come
up and reward you with your prize. One important rule, have
patience! You could get three sevens at 12PM or it might not
come until 6PM. But it will come some time! If you screw
something up (lose all your money) reset and load up your
game that you should of saved in the morning.

Time after hitting Jackpot: Go back to your house and save your game.
If it is still quite early, I recommend going back to the slot
house just to get some credits for tomorrow's session. If it
is quite late, then go practise Space Harrier or Hang On on the
SEGA Saturn in Ryo's house. I did this because I needed to get
the certificates for winning those games.

11:30PM: Go to bed and repeat the sequence again!

I have noticed some times that the Lapis Fortune Teller does not give you
a lucky number. I think it might be like the clue system, you can't use
it very often which is a pain. There's not much you can do to get around
this. If Lapis didn't give me a reading then I would make sure I had
saved my game in the morning, then just pick a random machine and play
until it gives me three sevens in a row (if it ever does that is). If it
doesn't and I haven't gained any credits I just reset and load up my save
I did in the morning, then choose a different machine. If your serious
about getting all the figures and 50,000 credits then I suggest you do
this as well. Remember, you only have until April 15th! That's when the
bad ending kicks in. I started to do the slot machines around the 10th of
February and I did it with loads of time left.

If you want to collect all the collectables from the Slot machines game
then you must get three lucky sevens 21 times! Or if your just collecting
the figures online and not the cherries and mini things then you have to
do it 17 times. You usually only get one item a day, so make sure to
plan ahead if your doing an ultimate save.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

(1) Q. Why did you write an FAQ on the slot machines?

    A. When I first tried to do the slot machines, I had a lot of trouble
collecting all the figures. So I decided to share some knowledge
on how to do it with more ease to help some people. :)
