The Elder Scrolls 2 - Daggerfall (Semi-FAQ) (e)

Daggerfall Semi-FAQ

Here's a list of questions which newbies like to ask, but this
ain't no FAQ, it's just a tool I use to prevent typing the same
dang thing over and over again when I see a post on one of these
(again 8-).

I'm sure someone is doing a _real_ FAQ somewhere, with at least
10 times as many questions answered. BTW, this doesn't cover
the Plot quest stuff, as only with the latest patch have I been
able to reliably save in plot quest dungeons when doing a quest.
While I haven't seen everything outside of the plot quests, I've
tried pretty darn hard to, and have had quite a bit of fun doing
it. Feel free to bug me at rcjohnso@prairienet.org, but I won't
be held responsible for my Psychotic Vampire behavior if I try to
chop your head off with Carentas, my Really Big Sword.

1) What School are the various effects?

Illusion
------------------
Chameleon
Create Item
Invisibility
Shadow
Light

Mysticism
------------------
Detect Anything (supposedly don't work)
Identify (if you can cast spells, don't need this spell)
Open (some magick locked doors need to be dispelled)
Teleport (most usefull spell)
Dispel Anything (leaves no corpses)
Lock (never used)
Silence (the monsters cast a zillion spells super fast)
Soul Trap (now if I could only sell these Daedra Lords)
Comprehend Languages (I'm a Psycho Vampire! I don't want no
                        steenkin' peace!)

Alteration
----------------
Climbing (why bother?)
Diminution (doesn't work)
Jumping (another pointless spell)
Paralyze (by the time I'm good with this spell, I don't need it)
Shield (good for wimpy hp/level mages)
Slowfalling (poor man's levitation)
Elemental Resistance (fire/frost deadras do lots of extra
                        element based damage)
Water Breathing (very cheap, lasts forever)

Thaumaturgy
---------------------------
Water Walking (very cheap, underwater equiv to levitate)
Levitate (does not work underwater)
Pacify Anything (Pah! Cut their heads off!)
Charm (ditto)
Spell Reflection (combine with a Spell Absorber, few spells get thru)
Spell Resistance (ditto)

Restoration
------------------
Cure Anything (very important. note that Cure disease also seems
to cure vampirism/lycanthropy b4 onset as temple)
Fortify Anything (magickally increase your stats to 100!)
Heal Anything (fortify is buggy, occasionally nukes your stats, so
be sure to have Heal Attrib spells. also the basic
heal health/stamina is good, and cheap)
Regenerate (my fave: full health regenerator at max time!)
Spell Absorption (I prefer to wear an item with this)

Destruction (note this is the only source of magicks you can
change the Element column to Fire, Frost, etc.)
------------------
Damage Anything (pretty simple)
Continuous Damage Anything (doesn't mean you can have a long lasting
                        area around caster nuker, apparently)
Disintegrate (area effect, for when you're really angry!)

Destruction/Restoration
--------------------------------------
Transfer Anything (supposedly doesn't work)

Alteration/Restoration
----------------------------------
Free Action (very cheap, prevents & cures paralysis)

Alteration/Destruction
------------------------------
Drain Anything (can't think of anything more)

2) How do I enter the Void?

Some dungeons just refuse to be solved, and after spending a few
real time days at it, many feel quite justified in hitting the
Void and hunting for the solution that way. First of all, if
you can't levitate a lot, you should stay away from the Void.
Everyone seems to have their favorite way to enter the Void, and
here's mine: find a steeply rising staircase/ramp area. More
importantly, the ceiling should be a steep ramp. Cast Levitate
then push 'd' (or whatever you've mapped the crouch key to).
Now, levitate into the steep ramped ceiling. Push 'd' again,
and then hold down the jump key 'j' for a little while, and
you'll pop into the void!

3) Where do I sell/what do I do with Holy Daggers, etc.?

Temples often provide them for quests, or require one to be
rescued, but otherwise you should sell them to a Pawn Shop.

4) Please help, I cannot kill that imp in the first level

You need a steel weapon or better to hit an Imp, so if you don't
start with one, ignore the Imp, for now. Imps also cast weak
attack spells, which usually won't kill you, but at 1st level
will come very close. Finally, Imps don't take much to kill, so
once you've got a steel weapon, save outside the door and keep
trying untill it dies.

5) No Regen Spell Pts in Light bug?

You didn't read the readme file. All no regen spell points
disadds default to the General version of the same name.

6) How do I go on an artifact quest?

You've got several ways to get quests for artifacts.

a) Summon a Daedra Prince: Read Invovations to Azura to find out
the Daedra days, get in good with some guild with a Daedra
summoner, and summon away!

b) Fighters/Knights guilds: At high rank, they occasionally give
quests for artifacts.

c) Follow Maps: Follow all those maps you keep finding. I've
heard of people following a map to a dungeon, finding a map
there that led to another dungeon, and finding a clue to an
artifact there. Wow.

d) Fairly rare, but working for townspeople occasionally nets
you with hints about artifacts too.

Finally, I think (but this is unconfirmed) that the artifacts
supplied by the Daedra Princes are distinct from the group of
artifacts supplied by the other methods, which also may have
some sort of exclusivity among them as well.

7) How do I repair magic items?

At present, the only known way of repairing magic items is to
wear several items enchanted with the Repairs Items advantage.
Note that items which "cast when held" will often damage
themselves faster than they can get repaired. Also, the Repair
effect does not occur during fast travel, so you need to actually
sleep several hours to effect the repairs.

8) Where can I use an Item Maker?

For those who are magickally skilled, get in good with the mages
guild, which is relatively easy. For the non-magickally
inclined, you need to turn to the Temple of Julianos. The
hintbook claims the important skills for Julianos are:
Thaumaturgy, Mysticism, Alteration, Short Blade, Impish,
Daedric, Lockpick. Practicing Short Blade is easy, and then
spend some cash to crank up your Daedric for the second skill.
You need to be Rank 5 in either guild to use the Item Maker.
Finally, the hintbook suggests that the Knights of the Lamp get
access to the mages guild functions as they rise in ranks.
Saddly, the various guild related knight guilds don't seem to
be accessibly in the game.

9) Who's Prince Rob the Psycho Vampire?

Prince Rob the Psycho Vampire has been playing Daggerfall ever
since it reached a store near him, although he'll probably take
a long break around Christmas 1996. His email address is
rcjohnso@prairienet.org if you have questions for him. He
also has a Big Sword for smiting his enemies, and has been
known to recklessly slay tens if not hundreds of innocent
bystanders heedlessly ignoring the searing sun and numerous
guards. Rather similar to Superman's alter-ego, in our world
he appears in the guise of mild mannered Rob Johnson of Urbana
Illinois.

10) How do I get a cure for lycanthropy/vampirism?

Once a year (i.e., you may have to wait a long time) a hunter
will send you a letter offering you a cure if you complete a
quest for them. BTW, these quests are kind of sneaky, so be
prepared to think, and write down what folks say (isn't it
annoying how you can't copy to log what people say to you about
your quest, when it should obviously be copied but isn't?).

11) How do I become a Vampire/Lycanhrope?

If you're a mage, you need a good Regen spell, something on the
order of 50 hps per tick. A non-mage needs an item which casts
Heal and/or an item which casts Troll's Blood. It would also be
a good idea to have a spell or item to raise your Endurance, so
that you can better resist the normal diseases that vampires tend
to infect you with. The next time you run into a vampire, save
before the battle. Cast whatever spells you need, then let the
vampire beat on you for a few minutes. Kill the vampire, rest,
and if you get a dream, you've been infected. Otherwise, load.
BTW, if you have a disease when you turn into a vampire, it will
often kill you since you're asleep for 2 weeks while transforming
into a vampire.
