1. Intro

Welcome and thank you for selecting my Half-Life guide. As you may have
noticed, it's not as big as the others but I am more precise, have made
my guide easy to read, and easy to understand. If you need help of any
sorts, use ICQ. My UIN is 8308120. If you don't have ICQ, use e-mail at
nooz@quackquack.com . This guide will grow and new things will develop.
This guide is only to be found at www.gamefaqs.com , that is VERY
important. If you do find this guide somewhere else (it may not have
this information on it) YOU MUST INFORM ME IMMEDIATELY! Tell me what
site, what URL, and if you can, other things. COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. If you want my guide, on your site, e-mail or ICQ
me and I will say yes. Never no. If you ask me, I WILL say yes.

BIG MESSAGE
My Old E-mail (nooz@excite.com or nooz@mailexcite.com) has been stopped.
My new e-mail is nooz@quackquack.com (seriously!) so if you sent a
message to mailexcite/excite and didn't get an answer, e-mail
nooz@quackquack.com . Thank You.

NOT SO BIG MESSAGE
As I am a very lazy person and seldom update this guide, I've decided to
take the easy way through. Yes, this guide will get finished but the
levels/worlds will NOT be done in order. I need to do the 3 most
difficult levels for people. 1. Blast Pit. 2. Xen. 3. Gonarchs Lair. I
literally get THOUSANDS of e-mails about, 'I've killed the tentacles,
gone down the hole but now what?' or 'I am hopeless at jumping in Xen'
and the occasional 'I don't deserve this game because I'm to stupid to
play' (OK that was a lie) but I think, once I get those 3 outta the way,
I can finish this guide properly.

What's New?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
v3.1: This particular update should bring Power Up (from W. Hinz) and
Gonarchs Lair and possibly a few more Qs for the FAQ.

v2.9: This update should have Hazard Course stuff, Unforseen
Circumstances, Enemies finished and the FAQ should have more questions.
Changed my E-mail. May have started Xen.

v2.5: Should complete what I didn't complete in update v2.0! Unforseen
Circumstances was going to be done but for some reason, GameFAQ's didn't
get 2.0 and I have to send this guide off fast. Sorry.

V2.0: First major update!!!! Mainly new sections etc. (Some are not
complete) Guide started. Plenty of other crap too. Just check it out.

V 1.5: Guess what? The next update of this guide will NOT be a Nihilanth
Guide. Why? Because I am finally making a guide for the whole Half-
Life!!! Don't get excited yet as it will take a long time to build. The
part I have made so far will only be a small section of the whole thing.
I wan't to make sections like, 'Glitches' and 'Cool Half-Life Sites' and
even info on 'Half-Life: Team Fortress (Half-Life's Sequel.)
There is no actual update here OK? Cool. Enjoy!

V1.1: After about 500 billion e-mails about the fact that you can kill
tanks (I can't seem to do it) I am changing it. A few new questions in
FAQ. And a couple of other notes stuck around the place.

2. Story
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
This game has a fantastic story to it as well. Here goes!

You are Gordan Freeman. You work at the underground, military missile
base called Black Mesa. You have been spending most of your life
perfecting a portal, a portal to the other world. Xen. Something goes
horribly wrong. Hundreds have been slaughtered. Ceilings collapse. Walls
cave in. And thousands of aliens from Xen have covered the area. In a
small amount of time, the government sends an elite group of Commandos
and Assasins. Their aim is to kill everyone, everything and completely
destroy Black Mesa so no-one finds out about its existence. The only way
out to the surface has been blocked. You have to go deeper and deeper
into Black Mesa to get out.

I know it's a pretty crappy section but hey, it takes up space don't it?
Got a glitch that ain't here? E-mail me! Nooz@quackquack.com or icq me
at 8308120

Near the beginning is a guy you cannot kill. You can paint the wall and
floor with blood but he won't die.

Sometimes when you are on an elevator, you get stuck and you can't move.
Press jump, use, or the crouch key and move around like hell to get out.

5. Hazard Course
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
This Section is designed so you can get the most out of the Hazard
Course and have no trouble in the game with movement.

This is tips, help things and more info on things you cant seem to do.
It is not a guide for the Hazard course as that nice see-through lady
helps you with that ridiculous voice.

1. Remember, you should complete the hazard course before starting the
actual game.

2. A lot of people have trouble with the 'flashlight part'. When going
in, aim you flashlight down and go straight ahead. When you get to the
end, jump and you cut off about 1/2 of the thing. If you desparately
need that 1 battery cell (you can make up for it later at a HEV) do it
properly.

3. The part with the swinging thing that you need to turn gets a lot of
people stuffed too. Turn it till it won't turn no more, then strafe or
turn, do a run jump, keep going and jump again.

4. The shooting part! The shooting part! In the earlier room to the
shooting part is lots of ammo and grenades for that gun. When you first
go into the shooting room, shoot the breakable glass and then stand on
the cross thing. Just shoot them until you come to the last one (this
one is pretty tough). You need to aim high and shoot a grenade with
secondary fire. It should hurtle through the air, go behind the screen
and kill the target.

5. When you get to the 3 jumps, stand as far back as you can, aim fairly
to the ground and when you get the the end, JUMP! You should make it to
the end in the 3 jumps.

6. When at the part where you learn to get hurt (gas/fire/toxins) go
fast. It doesn't hurt you a lot but if you are too slow, that stuff can
tear your health and armor down fast than Oprah on a glazed ham (I love
saying that).

7. There is a part where you must use a security guard. It's pretty easy
to use him BUT DONT SHOOT ANY ONE. If you want to, go in that room, but
make sure that the elevater door thing can't 'see' you. Then kill the SG
in here, then the Scientist and then watch as the other SG dies. You
can't kill that high powered turret and if you wanna get out, you get to
that train and go high speed or you are stuffed. I'm not sure if you can
hide in that room till the turret goes away.

6. Guide
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

A N O M A L O U S M A T E R I A L S

You first start in a long boring train ride. You can't get past this bit
so you have to wait till the end. When it stops you have to wait until
the security guard comes along and opens the train. When you get off the
train, head to the door and the security guard will open it. There will
be a second door and when you get through it, SAVE with F6 (I'll tell
you where its very important to save. You can save in other places as
well, though). Go upto the desk and they will talk to you about a
computer crash. Blah Blah Blah. Go right and follow the path. Now it's
time to explore! Go around and just find a locker room. It's not hard to
find. There will be 2 paths leading away from it in the other corners.
Go on the left path and you will find a little console with 3 tubes
below. One has a suit and the others are empty. Aim down at the console
and press E or your 'use' key on the middle button. The tube with the
suit should open and you can go down there and get it!. Your Hazard
Suit! Go back to the locker room and locate the 'Freeman' locker. Open.
There is an item on the floor. That is a Energy Box. Not for life, but
for your armour. Armour plays a big part in this game as it may mean the
difference of life and death. How corny did that sound? Anywho. There is
a secret locker that you can open and it contains ammo for a pistol. I'm
not sure if you can collect them yet or you have to wait until later.
Now it's time for more exploration. You should soon find a SG (Security
Guard) at an 'air-lock' of sorts and he should open it for you. Go in.
Go around the room to the elevator and go in. I don't think you need
instructions for how to use it. Now again, explore till you come to a
room with 2 SO's (Scientist Officers). They should chat and argue for
about 7 hours until they FINALLY open the goddamned door! Now go to the
platform with a computer on the far side and a ladder near by. Climb the
ladder and go over to the new computer. They should soon open the little
button hatch thing so you can turn on the machine. Go back down to the
the box thing with plenty of holes like a grille. Soon, the box goes
away and the sample you've spent many years 'perfecting' comes. Stand
behind it and guide it into the machine. You will be in a strange
blackness, constantly warping from Xen to Earth. You can walk around on
Xen and Earth here but not for long. Everything goes horribly wrong and
you now enter...

U N F O R S E E N C O N S E Q U E N C E S

After the explosion, fiddle with the retina scanners to open the door
(it'll take a while). Start heading back to the front desk. When you get
to the 2 scientists, use the standing one to get you into the next room.
Be careful here. The door on the other side will blast open. Keep going
and avoid the lasers. Get the crowbar thats on the floor. Kneel and
break the glass with it. Climb down the ladders to the door above. You
will find a security guard (SG) killing an alien. Dont let the guy die
(try to help him by slashing the aliens back). Go around and let him
kill the next one. Head back to the very beginning (reception). Go
through the opening on the bottom of the wall in there (you'll find it).
Go through here (watch for headcrabs) and up the sloping thing. Keep
going and when you see a dying SG, take his gun. Go thru the security
doors and kill the houndeyes then follow the path to a T-junction where
there is a door on the right. Go thru and up the ladder thats at the
end. Shoot the canister things to kill the baddies quick. Now climb up,
head to the right and get the SO (Scientist) to follow you and head
along the landing thing till you get to a security door. Use Mr. SO. to
go thru. Get the ammo and go back to the ground floor and take the other
path at the T-junction. Keep going to a door, that will be beaten down
by a baddie. Kill it and get the ammo then go to the locked gate with a
hole in front. Kill the alien you will see and look below at a lovely
headcrab. Drop thru into the water pipe and head around to find a valve.
Turn it, turn around, take the right hand turn and when the water rises
from no where, go up and break the grill with you crowbar. Get out, and
follow the path to a platform and a lever. Get the dead SG's ammo, pull
the lever and ride the platform down the slope. Sidestep the headcrabs
that come after you. Follow the path to a grill landing. After the
landing is broken by the nasty alien, jump to the pipes on the wall to
your right and climb over them to a grate in the far corner. Break in
and go to the end of this shaft, and break thru to drop down. Get some
cells in the crates and go into the door, down the ladder and follow a
path to a landing next to a canal. Head left and jump into the water at
the end. Then go through the openings in the wall. Climb out with the
ladder and follow the path to a door next to the canal. You'll come to a
room full of suspended crates. Climb to ladders to the top, jump on the
handrail and jump from crate to crate to the landing below. Aiming for
the cables helps. Follow the path to a lift, enter and go up.

where he cannot follow. make your way down until you reach an area with
a large opening in the center surrounded in railing. very cautiously
make your way to the next section of hallway. while doing this the
floor will collapse. jump the gap and continue. You will eventually
come to an area where there are several commandos and squad leaders(the
ones with red caps) proceed cautiosly. throw of fire a grenade into the
small blocked off area. this will kill two guys that would otherwise be
a nuisance. explore the area. kill commandos. many commandos. destroy
all crates, except explosive ones. find your way into an area with an
elevator in it. flip the switch on the wall and run to the elevator
before it goes down. get off of the elevator and kill several
houndeyes. go down the spiral staircase all of the way. they will go
down to an area with water on the floor. there are water worms in the
water, a very annoying creature, and a Zombie hiding around a corner.
dispatch of the zombie and go up to the generator. hack apart the
things stuck in it so that it will work again. go up to the middle
level of the stairs. look around until you find an area that has two
power generators spitting electricity between them. time your run past
them so that you do not get electrocuted. push the buttons. you will
see the water drain from the left side of the room. go back to the
elevator. as you reach it two commandos come down it. kill them. flip
the switch and go up. there will be several more commandos to kill. go
back to the main room. run by the Garg and into the large arch that
does not have a rail coming from it. run into the room and down the
stairs. run up the stairs at the far end, and flip the switch nearby.
This causes electricity to sprout from the top of the two red cones. do
not go between them. you will die if you do. go into the hallway next
to the stairs you just ran up. then open the door at the end and run
out into the main area, or wherever the garg is. attract him into the
room where you just flipped the switch. run into the door and down the
hallway. make him run up to you through the red cones. watch the
fireworks. go back to the room where the floor collapsed, way back in
the beginning of the level. there is a door that is blocked off by
boards. break the boards and go in. inside is a security guard that
will not die, no matter what, a HEV charger, and some ammunition. get
all of the ammo and flip the switch in the room until the rotating
section of rail is turned so that the ends are pointing left and right.
go back to the main room. get onto the train that is in one of the
halls and drive it until you reach the rotating section of track. stop
the train. rotate the track from the control room, and get back on it.
go forward. ram the barrier in your path and break through. You now
enter the next level "On a Rail"

Turn to your left and take long jumps to the next 2 islands, then make
you way down carefully. Drop to the lower ledge and find a small cave
entrance next to a pool. This leads to the inside of the island. Break
thru the web and go into the room. Activate 3 mushroom thingies and
break the webbing on the flying leaf thing that takes you to the
pedestals. Enter the new teleporter.

G O N A R C H ' S L A I R
Tips: Gonarch is the big thing. You can slow it with Snarks. You can
kill his babies with the hivehand.
Actual Guide: Chuck our little mate some Snarks and lead. It will
eventually run to a cave. At the end of this cave is a small clearing
with a place you can fall in the center. Again, give our friend some
roaches and bullets and then it will go thru the webbing off the side.
In the middle hole there is somewhere a healing pool and a jumping thing
to get back up. Go to where Gonarch is and shoot it from BENEATH. Plus
avoid his nice friendly children. When Gonarch dies, a pit will form. A
healing pool and a teleporter is inside.

7. Nihilanth
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

7a. What is Nihilanth?
Nihilanth is Half-Life's boss. He is massive, greenish yellow, and he
spawns these annoying little red flying aliens that really bug you.
Nihilanth has only 2 attacks, but they are good ones. They are:

Little White Ball of Light:
This hurts! This knocks off more than half of you life! Avoid these at
all costs.

Green Teleportation Sphere:
Obviously it takes you somewhere where you have to fight through all
this crap and difficult jumping to get back. Try to avoid these but if
you desparetly need ammo, take them.

Nothing more can be said about Nihilanth at the moment, without of
course, ruining the guide.
-
7b. Weapons to Use
These weapons will give Nilly-poo a lot of pain and suffering.

Crossbow:
Extremely Effective. Use it until ammo runs out.

Rocket Propelled Grenade:
Very Effective. Unfortunately you will probably use it to de-activate
Nilly's 'god-modeness'.

Auto-Matic
Effective. This one also shoots grenades (save those). A fair bit of
damage is given to Nilly.

Pistol/Revolver
Effective. Use this for someone annoying. You'll see. If you have any
ammo after you killed the baby Nilly, shoot the real Nilly.

Gluon Gun
Average. Use on the baby Nilly, but by all means, use it on the real
Nilly if you want.

Tau Cannon
Average. Same as Gluon.

Hivehand
Poor. Use this as a last resort. Nilly takes little effect, if any.
-
7c. Weapons not to Use

Shotgun
OK I guess, but not reliable at all.

Snark
You can't throw that high! They come back any way.

Grenades
You can't throw that high!

Hand Satchels
Hello! You need to lay them ON THE GROUND!!!!

Claymore
Nilly will NOT pass through that red line.

Crowbar
You can do it but is not recommended
-
7d. How to Kill Nihilanth.
Here is the guide.

You start off in an arena. Nihilanth will be on a pedestal in the
middle. Three large glowing crystals give him power. A pesky red thing
with a twin Gluon Gun (I think) flies around trying to kill you. Large
Stalagmites stick out of the ground. This is Nihilanths Arena.

Recommended you start off with over 45 health and as high as possible
HEV.

Race behind a large stalagmite quickly. Get your Rocket Propelled
Grenade ready. Aim for one of the 3 glowing crystals around the room.
Shoot it and shoot it again. 2 shots should get it. Do the same for the
other 2 crystals and when you run out of ammo for the RPG, use a Tau
Cannon, Gluon Gun, Hivearm or Revolver to destroy the remaining
crystal(s).

Remember, save after doing anything major (after each crystal is gone,
after the baby Nilly is gone etc. etc.)

A flying red thing will emerge. Kill it, but not with the Crossbow. It's
a tough critter. Now, get you cross bow, and while still behind the
stalagmite, shoot Nilly until you have no more crossbows left. Then give
it all the bullets you can, but not the grenades from the Automatic gun.
After you've cleared your ammo right off, get your Automatic ready. Go
to one of the three hover discs in the room. Hover up to the next ledge
carefully and hover up the next one. Remember, don't stand in the life
pool because you will be killed if you are there too long.

Now launch the grenades into Nillys head. Keep doing it until he dies.
Now carefully fall into the mud and watch him getting simply
electrocuted to death.

Thank you Planet Half-Life for some of this info.

Alien Life-Forms

Headcrab
Every game has an annoying, hard to kill enemy. These ones are a tad
easy to kill because they jump on your face. You encounter this enemies
all over the place. One can't kill you but in particular sections where
there is 15, they can kill you.

Description: A small reddish-orange thing with 4 legs.
How to Kill: If you use the mouse to play (the best way) you can kill it
with a gun. If not, crowbar.
Other info: Interesting noises come from them

Zombie
Very difficult to kill if you only have weaker weapons. Their HUGE claws
will slash you into a coffin faster than Oprah on a glazed ham.

Description: What seems to be a badly slashed up thing with no face.
Huge, long, scythe claws.
How to Kill: A crowbar or a machine gun

They just pop into existence when you life is somewhat low. Attractive
eye

with electricity. Quite difficult to kill.
How to Kill: Pump it with lead or use the hivehand but whatever you use,
do it quick.
Other info: Electricity is green :)

Barnacle
These things are the grey and red ropes that hang from the ceiling. They
are very nasty and you will die, no matter what your health is, if you
reach the mouth.

Description: What looks like rescue rope is actually its tongue. You
will get grabbed and sucked up.
How to Kill: Look up and shoot its mouth! Quick!
Other info: Comes in red and grey.

Houndeye
When I first saw it, I thought it was a type of dog with its head
chopped off. That 'neck' is actually it's eye.

Description: I just described it. It shoots a sound wave of sorts which
'ruptures the internal organs of its prey'
How to Kill: Shoot at it!
Other info: Runs

Bullsquid
Shoots phlegm (flem?) at you from afar.

Other Info: Can sense you by sound.

Ichthyosaur
Swimming being which eats alive people.

Description: Huge shark like thing with huge mouth.

9. FAQ
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
This is a FAQ for the whole game, not just Nihilanth. E-mail me at
nooz@quackquack.com or ICQ me at 8308120 to ask a question.

Q: Nihilanth is easy, isn't it?
A: Yes. Yes he is.

Q: I'm at the bottom of Blast Pit after the tentacle bit, NOW WHAT?????
A: I know you can't see it, but you must swim to the pipe.

Q: Is it just me, or does Half-Life have so-so graphics?
A: If would have to say yes. It does have fairly bad graphics, but thats
not important. Although I do think it would be a perfect game if it had
graphics like Unreal/Sin/Heretic 2/Rainbow 6/Shogo/Blood 2 (look at me,
I'm dragging on!).

Q: I saw Half-Life at a friends house and I am seriously thinking about
buying it. What computer would be good for it?
A: A Pentium 233 and over. You should have speakers, keyboard and mouse
in working order. Half-Life is a little tricky to install sometimes so
be prepared.

Q: I'm in a train area and I just keep on going in circles!
A: That's not a question but to not go in circles you have to shoot
those signs that tell you which way to go.

Q: I can't get through a door because I don't have access. What's wrong?
A: Get a security officer or scientist to open it. Talk to the person
with E until they come with you. Go to the door and they will let you
through. Sometimes they let you through after a 'yawn' talk.

Q: Is there any way to get past the train thing at the beginning?
A: No.

Q: Can I kill the tank?
A: Yes, you can. Shoot the top gun bit with rockets. Thanks Paul

Q: When I go up this one elevator, there is a bunch of explosives. When
I use my crowbar on them, I die. How do I get past them?
A: At the bottom of the shaft, where you hop on, lay a satchel grenade
(the one that detonates on command) on the floor of the elevator. When
its at the top, detonate, bring the elevator down, and hop on. There is
a slight glitch here sometimes. You can't seem to move. This cannot be
fixed the same way every time so press everything you can until you are
'unstuck'.

Q: I'm looking in the window of a door and people are getting rescued by
rescue ropes, how do I get to them?
A: DON'T!!! They are NOT rescue ropes, they are a type of enemy. Avoid
them!

Q: Is it possible to kill those purple witch things in Xen?
A: Yep, A full charged laser (gluon/tau) will do it. Also 8+ shotgun.
Don't bother though, just keep walking. Thanks Paul
