This is the fifth release of the Heretic FAQ. Heretic has
actually been out as shareware since December 12 1994 12:17am
according to the date stamps on the EXE files. According to the
readme.txt, the Registered Version has been available since
December 28 1994 through Mail Order, Fax, and the phone number
1-800-IDGAMES. However, I don't have the Registered Version yet,
so all information in this FAQ pertains to the Shareware Version.
I hope all the information in this FAQ is accurate and I am
sorry if there are any mistakes. I have tried to test all the
information I have received to ensure that it is true.
I would like to thank all who contributed to this FAQ. You
will get your credit later.

* 1.0 - How can I contact id Software, Raven Software and GTI? *
****************************************************************
To order stuff from id Software call 1-800-IDGAMES or E-Mail
them at order@idsoftware.com. This is STRICTLY for ordering.
To ask them questions E-Mail them at: help@idsoftware.com

I have discovered, by reading old press releases on the
id Software page, that Jay Wilbur, and I think John Romaro have
left id Software, which probably renders the Email adresses formerly
here useless. Sorry!

There is a live chat line on the id Software WWW page. I
haven't tried it yet, so let me know what you think. I think the
chat only runs on thursday nights at nine o'clock eastern standard
time, but I can't remember right now.

You'll find the Raven Software Web Page at: http://www.ravensoft.com

At the moment, I have no E-Mail addresses for anyone at Raven or
GT Interactive, however, if you have a problem that cannot be resolved
after reading this FAQ you can call GT Interactive at 212-686-9432.
This is their tech support line. You can also get tech suport on
the Raven Web page.

* 1.1 - What is HERETIC? *
**************************
HERETIC is a virtual world of medieval fantasy. You can look
up, down and all around seamlessly. Like you are really there,
inside the game. The game comes to you from the graphical masters
of Raven Software and the technical wizards at id Software, the
creators of the smash hit games DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D. In this
game you cast eldritch spells and wield awesome weapons such as the
Ethereal Crossbow and the Dragon's Claw. These and a few others are
all you have to destroy the undead and bestial horrors that slaughtered
your race. HERETIC uses the DOOM 2 engine and basically works the
same as DOOM 2. The weapons and enemies in HERETIC are basically
the same as the ones in DOOM 2. The only major improvements I have
noticed are the ability to look around, up and down and also the
fact that water splashes when you jump in to it.

Objective: Survival\Kill Enemies

Type Of Game: Action. Medieval Role Playing

View: Three Dimensional, first person, look up and down,
        side to side.

Three Episodes:
                1) City of the Damned -- Shareware
                2) Hell's Maw -- Registered
                3) The Dome of D'sparil -- Registered

Five Difficulty Levels:

               Easy 1) Thou needeth a wet-nurse
                    2) Yellow bellies-r-us
                    3) Bringest them oneth
                    4) Thou art a smite-meister
Hard 5) Black Plague possesses thee

Violence Rating: RSAC Rating of 3 on a scale of four.
Pretty bloody and gory according to them.
(I don't think it is that bad really).

* 1.2 - What do I need to play HERETIC? *
*****************************************
To run HERETIC with the ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM, you need:

            - A 486 or higher processor
            - MS-DOS 5.0 or higher
            - A hard drive with 20 megabytes free ***
            - 4MB of RAM
            - VGA Graphics

*** The game does NOT take up twenty megabytes of space. It needs
that much to install, however.

    I would recommend:

            - The latest version of MS-DOS (It works excellent
on version 6.22, but not so good in Win95.)
            - 8MB of RAM
            - Microsoft or Compatible mouse OR a joystick.
            - A SoundBlaster, AdLib or 100% compatible sound card.

* 1.3 - Where can I get HERETIC? *
**********************************
Heretic is available as shareware in software stores as well as
on the internet. My version of HERETIC was bought from a store on a
CD-ROM for around $10. I found this ftp site using the Netscape
web browser:

                ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames

I don't know whether the game itself is at this site, but it
is packed with things like extra levels, utilities, and all
sorts of stuff..

You can download the shareware version 1.2 of HERETIC from the
id Software homepage at http://www.idsoftware.com/main.html.
Look in ARCHIVES and from there, select HERETIC.

You could also always try the Official id Software BBS.

            (508)-365-2359 2400 baud
            (508)-368-7036 9600 - 14.4k v.32bis
            (508)-368-4137 14.4 - 16.8k HST/DS

Just call the number that corresponds to your modem speed.

To get the registered version of HERETIC either fax your order
to them at: 303-330-7553, mail your order to them at: id
                                              c/o StarPak
                                              P.O. Box 1230
                                              Greenley, CO 80632

Call them toll free at 1-800-idgames (1-800-434-2637) or E-Mail
them at: order@idsoftware.com

Another way to get the registered version is from the id Software
World Wide Web Page. You download an encrypted version of the game.
When you call the special phone number they give you, you give
credit card information. Then they give you a password to unlock
the encryption code. This is how I understand it works. There
might be a bunch of different codes though or all it would take
would be one person to pay and he could share codes with everyone,
so I don't know for sure.
Try also the Raven Software WWW Homepage for Screen Shots,
patches and the shareware version of the game.

************************************************
* 1.4 - What versions are currently available? *
************************************************
As of November 12, 1996, the current versions that I know of
are as follows.

        SHAREWARE: Current version: v1.2.
                    Others available: v1.0

        REGISTERED: Current Version: v1.2,
                     Others Available: v1.0

The commercial version of HERETIC is called Shadow of the
Serpant Riders. This version contains the three original
episodes from the registered version as well as two never
before released episodes, and DeathMatch levels. This
version is available FREE to registered HERETIC owners.
This or any HERETIC patch can be downloaded from:
                WWW.IDSOFTWARE.COM or WWW.RAVENSOFT.COM.
Shadow of the Serpant Riders is also available through
software stores. Check your local outlets.

*****************************************************************
* 1.4.1 - What is the difference between the differnt versions? *
*****************************************************************
The difference between the registered and shareware is obvious.
The registered version has more episodes, more enemies, more weapons
and probably new objects, etc. The other versions are as follows:
Dates are according the the HERETIC.EXE file stamps.

        1.0 - (12-24-94): First Release.
1.1 - Unofficial. Never released because more bugs
              were found and fixed.
1.2 - (06-28-95): Fixed "Green Screen" at startup
(mostly on 386's). Added support for Virtual
              I/O i-glasses! (VIOHT.EXE). Fixed SETUP.EXE savegame
restore bug. Latest DWANGO v2.01 w/server choices.
Latest DM.EXE v1.1. Fixed a few little bugs too
              miniscule to mention.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
***********************************
* 1.4.2 - How do I Patch HERETIC? *
***********************************
Well, I did it this way. I had v1.0 of HERETIC shareware, and
I downloaded a file called 10_12shp.exe from the Raven Software
Web Page. I then went to a dos prompt, and copied this file to
the directory where HERETIC resides. I typed 10_12shp at the dos
prompt and it self-extracted giving me the following files:
PSHELL.EXE, PSHELL.TXT, PSHELL.CFG, PATCH.EXE, PATCH.RTP.
Type PSHELL and you will get a program that will tell you that you
are updating HERETIC 1.0 to HERETIC 1.2. Just follow the instructions
the program gives you, and it will do everything. When it is done,
you will be left at the dos prompt. Type HERETIC to start the
game.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
************************************************
* 1.5 - Can I play HERETIC from a floppy disk? *
************************************************
The fact of the matter is, well, no. If you deleted all of the
bundled programs such as DWANGO and DEATH MANAGER, you might be able
to pull it off if you never saved your game. However, it would run
excruciatingly slow and would be even more jerky than it is on my
10ms hard drive. If you have one of those huge 20mb floptical drives,
I guess you could, but I don't know why you would unless you are
REALLY pressed for hard drive space.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
***********************************
* 1.6 - How do I install HERETIC? *
***********************************
*IN EXAMPLES, DO NOT TYPE WHAT IS IN BRACKETS, JUST DO WHAT IT SAYS*

I am not sure if the game is zipped in a self extracting file or not,
so some of the places where you see .zip may really say .exe, so just
type the name to make it extract the files.

If you have version 1.2 of the game, some of the file names may vary,
for instance the main zip file "HTIC_v10.zip" may be HTIC_v12.zip.

If you, like me, have the HERETIC CD-ROM v1.0, then to install,
all you do is put the CD in the drive, log on to that drive in dos.
(X is where your CDROM drive is. It is probably D: or E:)

[example 1]
        C:\> X: (press enter)

        X:\>

Type install.

[example 2]
        X:\> install (press enter)

The De-Ice program will then be launched. It will copy
two files to your hard drive called HTIC_V10.1 and HTIC_V10.2. The
program then combines these files to make one self extracting file
called HTIC_V10.EXE. This file extracts itself and leaves a runable
version of HERETIC on the hard drive.
If you have the disks, then you insert disk one and log to your
disk drive.

[example 3]
        C:\> A: (press enter)

        A:\>
Type install, and the same thing will happen as before, except that
the second file (HTIC_V10.2) is on disk 2 so you will be prompted
to insert disk 2 and press enter to continue. When it has finished
reading the second file, it will say "FINISHED REBUILDING EXECUTABLE.
REINSERT DISK ONE TO DECOMPRESS."
Both of these programs will then run the setup program that will
allow you to configure your peripherals and controls and launch HERETIC.

If you get HERETIC from either FTP or one of the web pages, you
will probably have one extra step. You will likely download a file
called HTIC_V10.ZIP. You need to have pkunzip either in the directory
where this zip file is or in your autoexec.bat PATH= statement. Type
pkunzip htic_v10.zip. You will then be able to run the install program
the same as outlined above.

******************************************
* 2.0 - What are the enemies in HERETIC? *
******************************************
I don't at this time know the proper names for any of the enemies
since I don't have the manual so, I will describe them as best I can.

Simple Flying Monsters: These guys look like a cross between a devil
and a pterodactyl (flying dinosaur). They
attack you and each other and if you leave
them alone long enough, they will kill
                         each other.

Advanced Flying Monsters: They look exactly the same as the simple
flying monsters and behave the same too,
except these ones throw fire balls at you.

Brown Mummy Guys: These dudes punch the heck outta ya but sometimes
when they die, they leave a wand crystal [see
section 2.1 for weapons and ammo] behind.

Advanced Mummy Guys: These guys are hard to see because they are
                      partially invisible. Their outline flashes
with fire, and a screaming skull flies out of
                      their chest (hurts you).

Big Guys W/Horns: Just what it says, these buddies throw hatchets
at you that are extremely damaging. You'd
better hope you've got lotsuv ammo if you run
                    into one of these guys.

Advanced Guys W/Horns: Twice as deadly and harder to see than the
normal guys with armour, these guys throw
a red hatchet at you which hurts you a
significant amount more than the common
                        green one.

Guys that Float: These folks wear a black, red, and yellow cloak
and float around muttering something that I
suspect is a secret message played backwards.
They shoot three black and purple things that
                  kill you pretty quick.

The Two Hellions: The two boss guys in HERETIC: City of the Damned.
They are rather large skulls. One of them
throws numerous fire balls at you and one of
them casts a tornado at you that will hurt you
itself and throw you into the lava around the level.

******************************************
* 2.1 - What are the weapons in HERETIC? *
******************************************
As you all know very well by now, I have shareware HERETIC,
which means I can only give descriptions for the weapons in the
shareware arsenal. These are proper names for all weapons.

Staff: This is your basic weapon. You have it at all times.
HERETIC's staff is DOOM's fist. The same as the fist, it is
relatively weak and only worth using at short range. Use this
weapon only when you have no other choice.

The Gauntlets of the Necromancer: They look like little gloves,
which is exactly what they are. They are to HERETIC what the chain
saw is to DOOM. Better than the staff, they also only work at
relatively close range. Fire an electric shock (?) at enemies.

The Elvenwand: This is the best of the starting out weapons. It
is the same ranking as the pistol in DOOM. It fires wand crystals
that you have to pick up. They look like little gold diamonds.
Also a crystal geode [see section 2.2 for special items] will
increase your ammunition with the wand, but I am not sure how much.

The Etheral Crossbow: The best overall weapon in the shareware
arsenal, it is equivalent to the shotgun in DOOM. It shoots three
etheral arrows which you can pick up by the bunch or by the quiver.
You also increase your ammo when you pick up the crossbow.

The Dragon Claw: This is the highest ranking weapon in
HERETIC: City of the Damned. It is equivalent to the chain gun in
DOOM. It shoots three dragon orbs at a time. You can pick up
dragon orbs on the ground and sometimes the Floating Guys drop
them when they die. To really enhance your dragon claw ammo, find
an energy orb. They are bigger than the regular orb and shinier.

The Hellstaff: The second most powerful weapon in the game. No
description available until I get the registered version. I assume
it is equal to the plasma rifle in DOOM.

The Phoenix Rod: The most powerful weapon in the game. No description
available until I get the registered version. I assume this one is
equal to the BFG 9000 in DOOM.

* 2.2 - What are the special objects in HERETIC? *
**************************************************
The following is a list of objects that can be picked up and
added to your inventory. NOTE: This is probably not yet complete
since *I only have the shareware version*. So I will add more
things if I find them.
Items with a # beside them are added to your inventory and you
must select them and press enter to use them.

The Crystal Vial - Adds 10% to your health instantly. Does
not add to your inventory. Looks like a
                           blue vial.

The Bag of Holding - Yep. That's definitely a DOOM / DOOM 2
ripoff. Anyway, it doubles the amount
of ammo you can have at one time.
**NOTE: It doesn't GIVE you twice as
much ammo, it just lets you HOLD twice
                             as much.

     # The Quartz Flask - Adds a certain amount to your health
when you choose it from the inventory.
                           Looks like a pink flask.

     # The Tome of Power - A black book with a white skull on it.
                            Doubles your firepower. NOTE: This
doesn't add any ammo, it just makes you
fire twice as much at a time.
                            Duration: Time Based

     # The Torch - Just a torch. Turns on the lights when selected
                    from inventory. Duration: Time Based

     # The Shadow Sphere - Makes you slightly invisible. Enemies
shots will be slightly less than accurate.
                            Duration: Time Based

     # The Wings of Wrath - These babies allow you to FLY!! One
of the coolest things about this game.
When you select them from the inventory,
push PgUp to fly up and home to touch
ground. Use the arrow keys as usual
to move forward, backwards and side to
                             side.

     # The Time Bomb of the Ancients - An hour glass that explodes
                                        and kills enemies when selected
                                        from inventory.
                                        BEWARE: The time bomb hurts
you if you are too close.
As soon as you drop it, RUN!

     # The Morph Ovum - Well, it has been confirmed. When selected
from the inventory, and used, little eggs
are shot out and when they hit an enemy . . .
POOOF the enemy becomes a chicken. Those
of us with SoundBlaster and compatible,
get to hear the sound of a chicken clucking!

     # The Ring of Invulnerability - Can we say INVINCIBILITY SPHERE!!
Another DOOM / DOOM 2 ripoff,
it turns your screen gold as
                                      opposed to silver.
                                      You are hurt by nothing.
                                      Duration: Time Based.

*************************************************
* 2.3 - What do the objects I can't pick up do? *
*************************************************
Well . . . One of two possible things. If you can't pick something
up, it is either an inanimate object, for example a floor light or
a wall torch (not to be confused with the torch you CAN pick up).
It could also be something that you can normally pick up, but you
can't because you have all you can hold. For example when you have
full ammo, you cannot pick up any more.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
***************************************************************
* 2.4 - What is the difference between the difficulty levels? *
***************************************************************
In the easiest levels, there are fewer enemies, and they are
killed more easily, and you are hurt less. I think the health
potions also heal more and certain objects don't appear in the
higher difficulty levels. As I said earlier, the difficulty
levels are:

Thou Needeth A Wet Nurse, Yellow Bellies-R-Us, Bringest Them Oneth,
Thou Art A Smite Meister, Black Plague Possesses Thee.

They are pretty self explanatory as far as the easy to hard ratio
goes.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
*********************************************************
* 2.5 - What are the secret rooms and doors in HERETIC? *
*********************************************************
A secret room is a room that is harder to find than other rooms
in the game. These rooms usually don't contain any enemies, but
they do contain lots of good stuff [see section 2.2 for special items].
They could also contain health potions, ammo, weapons, and other
secret doors. If you have ever played DOOM or WOLFENSTEIN 3D you
are probably familiar with secrets and the concept of them, more
so with DOOM because it is much like HERETIC.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
***************************************************
* 2.5.1 - How do I find a secret room in HERETIC? *
***************************************************
The things to look for are: A different looking wall pattern,
a shadow on the wall and just in front of the wall, a wall between
two objects, etc.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
*********************************************
* 2.6 - Is there a secret level in HERETIC? *
*********************************************
After many months of testing, I have come to the conclusion that
there IS a secret level in HERETIC. It is called THE GRAVEYARD and
is E1M9.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
*******************************************
* 2.6.1 - How do I find the secret level? *
*******************************************
In E1M6 - The Cathedral, the way out is a transporter. The
average transporter is red and will transport you to different parts
of the level. You must find a transporter that is PURPLE*, that
is in a maze of secret passages. This will take you to E1M9 -
The Graveyard. When you complete this level, you will continue the
game on level seven (E1M7 - The Crypts). *NOTE: The transporter
to E1M7 is in the second room of the level. IT IS ALSO PURPLE!!
But, it is larger than a regular transporter.

In order to preserve the fun of searching, these are the only
clues I will give concerning the secret level.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
*********************************************************
* 2.7 - Is there any way to edit the levels in HERETIC? *
*********************************************************
id Software has respectfully requested that you not modify the
levels for the shareware version of HERETIC. I don't know of any
map editors made specifically for HERETIC however I have a trick
that might work. If you have a DOOM map editor such as DoomCAD or
DEU, copy it in to the same directory as HERETIC. Rename the
HERETIC.WAD file to DOOM.WAD and start the editor. It may take you
a while to figure out what does what because the editor still thinks
you are using DOOM, so it will still have the names of DOOM objects
in it. There is probably a way to fix this too, but I haven't
tested it much.
When you are done your editing, rename the .WAD file back to
HERETIC.WAD and type heretic to start the game.
Notice the name of the file you have to change is HERETIC.WAD
and not HERETIC1.WAD. HERETIC1.WAD is the shareware file and cannot
be edited by either of the earlier mentioned editors.

** THIS IS HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL **
** BACK UP HERETIC BEFORE YOU TRY IT **

The easier way would just be to check out the ftp site I
mentioned earlier. In case you weren't paying attention, it is
        ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames
Look around in here for a while and you are bound to stumble
across something. **Reviews of level editors will appear in further
editions of the FAQ**
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
****************************************************
* 2.8 - Are there new HERETIC levels already made? *
****************************************************
None that I know of as of yet although you might look in:

            ftp.uwp.edu:/pub/msdos/games/id/home-brew
                          OR
            ftp.uwp.edu:/pub/incoming/id

I don't know about these two, so just check.

There is a directory in the ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames
site called LEVELS. I am pretty sure you should look here.

***********************************************
* 2.9 - Is there any way to CHEAT in HERETIC? *
***********************************************
Yes indeed. The codes are as follows. Please don't abuse
the codes, I hate them. Use them to see the neat things they
do and that can be all.
                kitty - No Clipping Mode
massacre - Kills all monsters on the level
                ponce - Full Health
                rambo - All weapons
shazam - Activates the Tome Of Power
                quicken - God Mode
                skel - All Keys
ravmap - Toggles through different map views
                engage (1-3), (1-9) - Level Warp
gimme (a-i), (1-9) - Obtain various special items
                iddqd - Instant Death
idkfa - Removes all Weapons but the staff
                cockadoodledoo - Turns you into a chicken. . .

***********************
* 3.0 - It's too slow *
***********************
This is probably the most common annoyance among the growing
HERETIC cult. The ways to fix it are fairly simple and repetitive,
but they should work.

        A) Remove all TSRs from memory. An example of a TSR is a
            driver.

        B) Press the Left Shift or F5 key while your computer says
Starting MS-DOS . . . This will make your computer
boot with a "clean disk". In other words, it bypasses
autoexec.bat and config.sys. This frees up memory.

        C) Make the view screen in the game smaller. This will
            make it run more smoothly.

        D) Do what I did. Upgrade your RAM from 4MB (minimum) to
8MB (recommended). [see section 1.1 for HERETIC
            requirements].

On my 486-33Mhz, it is still kinda slow -even with 8MB
of ram- in places with lots of enemies.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
************************
* 3.1 - It's too hard! *
************************
Play the game at an easier difficulty level. That's all I have
to say about that. Seriously, though, don't worry if you get fried
in the first room in level one by the simple red flying guys. Just
like every other game, it will come to you. PLAY YOUR BRAINS OUT!!
You'll be a better HERETIC for it.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
**********************************
* 3.1.1 - I get lost too easily! *
**********************************
Yes, that is bound to happen, especially to new, inexperienced
users. But never fear, I used to get infinitely lost in just level
one! Now that I have played it more, I seldom get lost at all.
Some things to do if you think you are running around in circles,
is to look for dead bodies. When you see these, you will know you
have already been here. Look for noticeable land marks such as a
special wall pattern or an odd shape on the floor. Look around for
switches that you have missed before. Flipping them may ultimately
save the day by opening a door to another section of the level. And
last but far from least, listen for the monsters going "hahahahah!"
or "arrrrgh" or the infamous "haaaaaaaaaaaaaa" (a hissing noise).
Just follow the sounds. Of course this will only help those of you
with SoundBlaster or compatible, but it is a help all the same.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
********************************************************
* 3.1.2 - I keep missing doors and running into walls! *
********************************************************
The following is an excerpt from the "Wolfenstein 3d and Spear
of Destiny FAQ" Version 3.30 by Stanley Stasiak
(stasiak@tartarus.uwa.edu.au) or (stasiak@lethe.uwa.edu.au) Any
changes will be placed in [square brackets].

Sounds like a major new user disorientation syndrome to me, but
could also be attributed to a slow computer. See, slower machines
sacrifice the frame rate to keep the gameplay speed constant.
Thus you might miss a few frames here and there and that will fool
you into overshooting your targets (doors, [monsters] when you're
aiming your [weapon] at them, etc.) Strafe function helps here
sometimes. You can also try experimenting with various input devices.
Mouse is more accurate on position but slower when it comes to
movement. Joystick is rather inaccurate but easy to handle and
still slow. Especially your rotation speed. If you have a
Thrustmaster or other joystick + configurable buttons you can
program these for strafe & run functions. That should make it a
little easier.

******************************************************************
* 3.1.3 - I never get all the Kills, Secrets, Items or Par Time! *
******************************************************************
Well, the only thing I can say is LOOK HARDER. And GO FASTER.
One fine day, you will find everything and get all of everything
and your life will be complete. Until then, just look EVERYWHERE
for secrets and items and stuff.
***NOTE: It is pretty hard to do everything in a level in par
time so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
************************************************
* 3.1.4 - I always run out of ammo and/or die! *
************************************************
The simple solution is to conserve ammo. Shoot as little as
possible, look for and pick up any ammo on the ground and if a
monster drops it when he dies, pick it up. Also look for secret
passages. These very frequently contain health potions and ammo.
To conserve your life, use the quartz flasks and pick up crystal
vials. As I said before, look for secret passages. Another thing
that will help your health is the ring of invulnerability. It will
give you full health, make you temporarily invincible, and turn the
screen GOLD. Oh well . . .
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
************************
* 3.2 - It's too easy! *
************************
Well, in that case, try playing on Black Plague Possesses Thee.
That should get you smoked pretty easily. If not, try going through
the whole game with just the elvenwand and lower weapons. That
will definitely get you smoked!
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
******************************************************************
* 3.3 - I want to puke during play, after play or watching play! *
******************************************************************
A great debate rages on over what causes games like HERETIC,
DOOM or WOLFENSTEIN 3D to make users want to puke. Some say that
the animation is so smooth (!) that it fools your brain in to
thinking it is real. Others say it is too jerky and makes you sea
sick. Others still, say that lack ofproper acceleration attribute
to the nausea. I really don't give a rat's patoot why it happens.
All I can say is. . . don't worry about it. The first time I played
WOLFENSTEIN 3D, I had the worst &*#^ing headache after. But after
a while, it didn't bother me anymore, and I never had a problem with
DOOM or HERETIC. If it really bothers you that much, here are some
steps to take.
        A) Try different display sizes. Use F5 to access the menu.

        B) Try sitting closer to or further away from the monitor.
DON'T SIT TOO CLOSE. You don't want to absorb radiation.
If you sit further away, you see other things and you
brain may realize that the game is not real.

        C) If you have a turbo button, turn it on/off for different
            effect.

        D) Have breaks during play. Take turns with someone else.

        E) Just give it time. You will probably adjust eventually.

* 4.0 - What is wrong with this thing!?!?!?! *
**********************************************
The following is an excerpt from the HERETIC readme.txt file on
troubleshooting.
-------------------------------------------------------------
TROUBLESHOOTING ADDENDUM
-------------------------------------------------------------
If you require technical assistance to run Heretic, call id
Software's technical support line at (303) 339-7111 or
e-mail help@idsoftware.com.

If possible, please be near your computer when calling id
Software's technical support. Please have information
regarding your system setup and configuration available.

Before changing your system or software setup we recommend
that you review your system manuals to ensure that your
modifications will not endanger any existing information or
hardware on you system or network. Modifying your system or
your software setup can be dangerous, and we cannot help you
with any resulting problems.

-------------------------------------------------------------
When Heretic runs, I get an "Insufficient Memory" error or Heretic
just doesn't run.

You don't have enough free RAM to run Heretic. This usually
happens with 4Mb RAM machines -- you need about 3Mb of free
RAM to run Heretic. If you have DOS 6 or later, boot your system
and hold the left-shift key as the "Starting MS-DOS..."
message appears. This will bare-boot your system and you must
change to the Heretic directory and run Heretic. Your best bet is
to make a CONFIG.SYS menu for a custom Heretic boot -- see
page 97 in your MS-DOS 6 User's Manual.
If you have DOS 5.0 or earlier, you must create a bare boot disk.

Note: Do not use memory managers like EMM386, QEMM, etc.
Do not use disk caching programs like SMARTDRV, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I get a "WRITE ERROR" while Heretic is decompressing.

You are using a disk compression program such as STACKER or
DOUBLESPACE. These utilities try to make an "educated"
guess as to how much disk space you have left. Obviously,
they're wrong. Delete some big games that are chewing up
hard drive space, like any Wolf-alikes or DOOM-alikes. :D

-------------------------------------------------------------
The Windows SETUP program runs after installation.

Heretic did not install to your hard drive, probably due to
insufficient disk space. See above answer for a solution.

-------------------------------------------------------------
My Gravis Ultra Sound doesn't work.

The default IRQ for a GUS is 11. Heretic doesn't handle IRQ's
above 7. Change this with your GUS setup program.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I can't get digital sound from my Sound Blaster compatible
sound card.

You are experiencing a DMA conflict. You may have a CD-ROM
or hard drive on the same DMA channel that you specified in
Heretic's SETUP program. Change the DMA channel of the sound
card or offending device.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Heretic locks up before I see the title screen or at the title
screen.

You need to turn "Hidden Refresh" off in your CMOS Advanced
Chipset settings. If you're using RAMBIOS.SYS, you must
remove it from your CONFIG.SYS. Make sure you also turn off
any Hardware Video Shadowing (also found in CMOS settings.)

-------------------------------------------------------------
Heretic runs really slow, locks or "pauses" on a fast system.

Some systems have a option in the CMOS setup for switching
the speed of the PC from the keyboard. This is the
"Turbo Switch" or "Turbo Switching" option. Disable this
setting and your problem should be fixed.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I hear static when listening to Heretic with my Sound Blaster
(or compatible) card.

Run SBP-MIX (in your SBPRO directory) and turn down Line and
Mic volumes to 0.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I still hear static, or my sound effects are breaking up.

Disconnect any parallel port devices. (Sound cards,
to work with Heretic, must use IRQ5 or IRQ7, which are
used by LPT2 and LPT1 -- where printers are connected.)

-------------------------------------------------------------
I can't get sound on my ATI Stereo FX card.

Contact ATI for a BIOS upgrade.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Heretic is too dark to see anything.

On some monitors, Heretic may be too dark to play. Press F-11
to improve the view.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Why can't I get music or sound effects?

If you're not hearing sound effects and/or music, Heretic may
have incorrect information regarding your sound card. Run
the SETUP program to check if Heretic has the correct
information on your sound card.

Note: Heretic only supports IRQ numbers which or 7 or below.
Be sure you set your sound card to an IRQ number which
is 7 or below. Refer to your sound card manual for details
on setting your IRQ number.

Note: This is particularly important for Gravis Ultra Sound
users because the standard default for the GUS card is 11.

--------------------------------------------------------------
How can I run Heretic under OS/2?

The ideal Heretic-OS/2 system is a 486/66 with at least 8MB of
RAM. In order to get Heretic up and running, first copy a
program object to the desktop from the templates folder. For
details on this procedure, please refer to your OS/2 Manual.
Once you have the program path and optional command line
arguments set up for the program object, you will need to
edit the DOS session settings.

**Only required for Network play
*** Leave as default

-------------------------------------------------------------
During startup, the Heretic startup stops at "looking for node..."

This occurs when you enter a number of players greater than
the amount of players actually entering the game. For
example, if you only have three players playing, but you
tell Heretic to expect four players, it will wait until the
fourth player starts the game. Press ESC to exit and restart
the game with the correct number of players.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I'm receiving the error, "IPX NETWORK NOT DETECTED."

Currently, Heretic only supports a network that uses the IPX
protocol. If you receive this message, check your network
manual to ensure your network uses the IPX protocol.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I've received the message, "CONSISTENCY FAILURE" while
running Heretic.

For Heretic to run properly as a multiplayer game, all of the
machines that are running Heretic must maintain a nearly
identical status of the game during network play. If you
receive this message, something has occurred which caused
the multiplayer game on one computer to be different from
the multiplayer games running on the other systems. If this
occurs, all of the players must quit from Heretic and restart
the game.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Why can't I get Heretic to run as a multiplayer game?

If someone else is running Heretic in multiplayer you may
receive a network port conflict. From the SETUP program,
change Heretic to run under a different port. Consult with the
person in charge of your network to receive a valid port
address.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Why isn't the animation smooth?

If the animation isn't running smoothly on your system you
should try reducing the window size. Refer to your Heretic manual
for instructions on this options. Or get a faster computer! :D

-------------------------------------------------------------
Why doesn't my mouse work with Heretic?

If you renamed or commented-out information in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT you may have removed the command which loads
your mouse driver. Loading your mouse driver into DOS can be
as simple as typing MOUSE and pressing ENTER at the command
prompt.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Why can't I find a plasma rifle, BFG 9000, Berserk power-up,
or invulnerability power-up?

Because you're playing Heretic, not DOOM or DOOM II. Please ask
us questions that make darn good sense.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Why can't I find the Hellstaff or Phoenix Rod or any of the
other really cool power-ups I've heard about?

Because you haven't bought the registered version of Heretic yet.
These awesome components of Heretic are available ONLY in the
registered version. Call 1-800-IDGAMES for a remedy.

Version What was changed Date Released
=======                 ================             =============
v1.0 Ha Ha. Fun to make you think there June 16 1995
was a .99!! This is the first release
            of the FAQ.

v1.1 Ok. I added the info about the DOOM 2 August 24 1995
engine to Section 1.0 "What is HERETIC?".
Added Bag of Holding and Invulnerability
Ring to 2.6. Also the # designation for
            inventory listing. Fixed grammar and
spelling. Got confirmation on Morph Ovum
            Theory.

v1.2 No real big deal. I just fixed spelling, December 13 1995
grammar, and a few section divisions. . .

v1.3 Same thing as the last revision. June 20 1996
            No biggie. . .

v1.4 Lost. Was to be a total revision, but Date Unknown
I can't find it since the CIA raided my
            hard disk.

v1.5a Included my Email address. Versions November 27, 1996
            currently available. Raven and id
            WWW Pages. Rearranged order of
            sub-sections. Included cheats and
version differences as well as HOW DO
I PATCH HERETIC section. Added FTP site.
            MAJOR OVERHAUL!!
