IV: Why I won't be updating again

Section I: Intro
Hello again! And welcome to my third in a trilogy of guides to the game Ys
Book I & II for the Turbo-Grafx-CD/TurboDuo! This will be a change from the
previous Boss Guides you're used to seeing from me, in that it will guide
you, step by step, through the entire game. It won't be unlike a mother
helping her child across the street; I'll try to be as detailed as possible
throughout this guide. HOWEVER, be warned that while I'll try to avoid
spoilers, because of the nature of the guide I may accidentally let a few
slip in. I will include rewards and such for doing tasks, so don't get mad
if you see those in the guide (They should be there after all), but I'll try
to avoid giving away the plot. Also, I WILL NOT be giving boss strategies
other than Equipment and Levels, because I've already written a guide for
that and to repeat it would be redundant. Rather than writing a Version
History, I'm just going to put the Version number a section was instated
next to that section.
This guide goes out to my cousin Jamie, who left Connecticut on 11/10/99 to
go to Colorado for a few years, in the process leaving me the system and game
with which I will write this guide. Hope it works out for you dude.

Section II: Basic Controls
In this game, you kill enemies by simply walking into them with the Control
Pad. Button I selects choices in menus (And uses Magic in Book II), and
Button II cancels these choices and uses Items in your inventory. The Control
Pad also moves the cursor in menus around. Finally, the Select Button brings
up the main menu, from which you can view Equipment and your Inventory, Save
and Load games, view your Status, and Change the Speed of the game.

Section III: Book I Walkthrough
NOTES: Items to acquire are listed in something resembling an order in which
they should be acquired. Also, "Up, down, left and right" mean these
directions on the Control Pad. Whenever a direction is made reference to,
such as north, it means the direction you typically think of when you think
of north (Up. South: Down, East: Right, and West: Left.).

Oh, one general tip: SAVE OFTEN!! I can't stress this enough. To paraphrase
The Internet for Dummies, in theory you save after you complete a major task.
In reality, ask yourself, "Would I enjoy redoing everything I've done since I
last saved?" If the answer is "No", save.

    Subsection A: Getting Started
        Subsubsection 1: Absolute Beginning
Items to Acquire: Sapphire Ring, Short Sword, Small Shield, Sara's Crystal,
Golden Vase, Long Sword

Let's get started, shall we? There are two ways to begin the game: By
selecting "Beginning" from the screen that says "Ancient Ys Vanished", or by
going to "Continue" and picking "Start Game Story". After viewing the opening
sequence, you'll be just to the south of a building in Minea Town (The
instruction manual says it's Esteria, but the save file clearly states "Minea
Town". I believe Esteria is in fact the entire WORLD in which Book I takes
place). Go into the building. There, a fortune-teller named Sara will tell
you of the peril of the land of Ys, and instruct you to buy some equipment.
Leave the building and go north until you come to a building that says "Pim"
in cursive writing. Go in and buy a Sapphire Ring. Leave and go directly to
your right until you come to the bar (It says "Bar" on it). Go in and talk to
the One-Eyed Man. He'll take the Ring and give you 1500 Gold and 50
Experience Points. A free Level Up! Woo!
From there, talk to everyone else in the bar to pick up some info, and
leave. Go down and right until you come to a building with two doors. One
will have two swords above it, and the other will have a shield. Go into the
door with the two swords above it (It's a Weapon Shop), and buy a Short
Sword. Then go into the other door (The one with the shield above it; It's
[No! You guessed!] an Armor Shop). Buy a suit of Chain Armor. Leave and Equip
both items. Talk to everyone else in the village, again to get more info, and
leave town by the exit in the north-center.
You'll now be out in the Field, where you'll first experience combat
(NOTE: From now on, whenever you go into an area with enemies, it's assumed
that you fight any in your general way. You can't kill them all; they
regenerate endlessly. But at least fight SOME.). Woo-Hoo! If you follow the
path leading from Minea Town, you'll cross a bridge and eventually end up in
Zeptic Village. For now though, stay on the left side of the bridge and kill
enemies until you have a total of 700 Gold (You should have 600 before
leaving town if you did the above sequence right).
Once that is done, go back to Minea, and to the Armor Shop (It's in the
bottom-right of the town). Buy a Small Shield and Equip it. Leave the shop
and go left until you come to Sara's Shop (The first building you entered, in
the bottom-left of town). Go in. She'll offer to tell you about the Books of
Ys. Go ahead and let her if this is your first time through the game, which I
will assume it is (If not, just say "Yes" when she asks if you know about
them). When she's done, she'll tell you that one of the books is in the
Shrine, and ask you to recover the book (If you said that you knew about the
books, she'll simply ask you to recover the book). Say that you will. You
will then receive Sara's Crystal and 100 Experience Points, which will be
enough for a Level Up, and possibly two, depending on what enemies you killed
in the field.
The next part is optional, but it makes this part of the game a little
easier. Leave Minea and follow the path across the bridge. When you see a
big, leafy tree (It stands out from the rest), go just to the right of it,
then down until you see a lake on your right. Go to the contour (For lack
of a better word) in the north side. You should find a Golden Vase (If not
go as far into the contour as you can and hit Button I). Go back to Minea
and take the vase to Pim's Shop. Sell the vase back to him for 2000 Gold,
then go to the Weapon Shop and buy a Long Sword. Equip it. Now leave town.
(Thanks go to Clint Dyer for pointing out the location of the Golden Vase in
his Ys: The Vanished Omens Walkthrough for the Sega Master System. The EXACT
location is a little different in the SMS version [It's also called the Gold
Pedestal, rather than the Golden Vase]), but it was his guide that pointed
out the body of water in which it could be found.)
(ALTERNATE METHOD: After getting the 1500 Gold from giving the Sapphire Ring
to the One-Eyed Man, IMMEDIATELY go get the Golden Vase [Try not to fight any
enemies along the way]. Sell it to Pim, then go to the Weapon Shop and buy
a Long Sword, thereby passing the Short Sword entirely. Then go to the Armor
Shop and buy the equipment described above. Then see Sara and leave town.)

Subsubsection 2: To Zeptic and the Mountains
Items to Acquire: Shrine Key

Okay, you should now be in the Field. Just follow the gravel path into
Zeptic Village. Once there, talk to everyone, including the Mayor (In the
house in the upper-left region of the village). The Mayor will ask you if you
can keep a secret. If you can, he'll ask you to recover the Silver Bell from
the thieves (Ignore this). Say yes. Then go to Jeva's House in the lower-right
section of the village. She'll recognize Sara's Crystal and give you the
Shrine Key. Leave the village by the northern exit, in the right half of town.
You will now be in the mountains. Just follow the path--don't take the
split near the top--and you should see the Shrine looming ahead. If you're
not at Level 4 (Or higher) at this point, fight enemies until you attain
that level. Then go into the Shrine.

        Subsubsection 3: The Shrine Entrance
Items to Acquire: Ruby

Here in the Shrine Entrance, you'll face your first Boss. Yippee! But first,
you have to get there. From the entrance, turn right and touch the gold
statue. You should now see 4 doors. Take the upper-right path first; Walk all
the way to the right and open the chest to get the Ruby. Then go back to the
center of the paths. The upper-left path leads to a treasure chest you can't
get yet, so ignore it for now. The lower-right path eventually connects to
the upper-right path. Go to the lower-left path, and take the left door.
Follow the path until it splits, and then take the lower route. Once you open
the big door you'll face your first boss--The Magician. Save before entering
the door, then walk in and kick his butt. When you win you'll receive 150
Experience (Which should be enough for a Level Up, and maybe 2) and be able
to explore the Shrine Depths.
(NOTE: At this point you may wish to go back to Minea and sell the Ruby to
Pim for 1200 Gold. You'll do that anyway, though, at a later point in this
walkthrough.)

Subsubsection 4: Getting the Volume Hadal
Items to Acquire: Prison Key, Treasure Box, Necklace, Mask of Eyes, Armor
Ring, Plate-Armor, Silver Bell, Ivory Key, Silver Shield, Heal Potion, Marble
Key, Volume Hadal, Power Ring (Optional at this point)

Now it gets a little more difficult. When you go through the door beyond
The Magician, you follow a brief path. Then you'll notice that the path
splits into FIVE different sections--the one you came from, and four others.
We'll call the central passage where you first see these Point A.
For now, take the lower left path, and keep going left until you can't.
Then go down through several doors until you can't do that anymore either.
>From there, go right, and up through the first door you see (Let's call this
Point B). You'll see a treasure chest guarded by two enemies. Kill both of
them (Be careful, you may take damage when you hit them the first time) and
open the chest to get the Prison Key.
Now go back to point A, and take the upper-right path. When the path
splits, take the lower branch, and proceed to the right. You should see two
prison doors. The left one contains an enemy, and the other one contains...
a prisoner-- a girl named Feena. She'll give you 100 Experience Points and
the Treasure Box Key.
From the right prison door, take the second path from the right (It joins
with the one on your far right), and follow the left path. Take the first
right split you see and you'll come to a treasure chest containing the
Necklace. Go back to the left path mentioned above and go all the way down,
then follow the lower wall to the left. From there, go up to find a treasure
chest. Inside is the Mask of Eyes.
Now leave the Shrine--but before you go, get the treasure chest you
couldn't unlock in the Shrine Entrance. Now that you have the Treasure Box
Key, you can unlock it and get the Armor Ring. When you Equip it, it
decreases the amount of damage enemies (Except Bosses) do to you by one-half.
Go all the way back to Minea and sell both the Ruby (If you haven't done so
already) and the Necklace to Pim for a total of 1700 Gold. Now go to the
Armor Shop, buy some Plate-Armor, and Equip it.
Now go all the way back to Point B. Now take the right door and the right
path. When the paths split, take the second northern path (Counting the small
dead end to its left as a path), and when it splits into the crossroads, go
down. Open the treasure chest that contains Zeptic Village's Silver Bell.
Go back to the path split in the above paragraph (Not the crossroad one),
and take the final path on the right. It leads to Shrine Depths 2
From the stairs, which we'll call Point C, go left and take the third
split leading down. Immediately go left when you can, and then go up to get
to a chest. This chest contains the Ivory Key.
Go back to point C and just keep heading down, then left, until you can't
go anymore. Then go right, and you should see another Gold Statue. Mark this
as Point D. Go past it, and take the upper path and touch THAT statue. Take
the lower left path to the Silver Shield. Equip it.
Go back to point D and this time touch the statue. Take the obvious path
before you to get a Heal Potion. Once you've done that, get near the blue
statue--the one whose eyes you think you see glow--and use the Mask of Eyes
in your Inventory. Secret door (So you know, the Mask of Eyes allows you to
see hidden passages. Its two drawbacks are that it turns everything black and
white, and more importantly, you can't see enemies. They're definitely there
though.)! Go through the door and immediately take off the Mask of Eyes. From
there, take the lower path and touch the statue. Touch the chest and get the
Marble Key.
At this point, if for whatever reason you're NOT at level 10, leave the
Shrine (You'll have to use the Mask of Eyes again in order to get out) and
return the Silver Bell to the mayor of Zeptic Village. In return you'll pick
up 80 Experience Points and the Power Ring, which, when equipped, doubles
your attack power (My favorite ring, besides Healing). If you used the Heal
Potion you got earlier then go back to Minea and buy another one for 1000
Gold. You can buy them at the Hospital, to the north of the Weapon Shop.
Once you're at Level 10 and have the Long Sword, Silver Shield and
Plate-Armor, you're ready to go get the Volume Hadal. Go back to the path
split mentioned 2 paragraphs ago, but this time take the UPPER path, and
touch the statue. Follow the path to the left and through the first door.
Use the Heal Potion if you're not at full HP. Save. Now go through the second
door and try to take the treasure chest. You'll be attacked by the Millipede.
Defeat it and take the treasure chest to get the first Book of Ys, the Volume
Hadal! Yaaaaay! :) Now leave the Shrine, again using the Mask of Eyes to
reveal the door.

Subsection B: The Next Two Books
        Subsubsection 1: The Trek Back
Items to Acquire: Power Ring (If you haven't yet), Katana
This section isn't too hard. Simply go back to Zeptic Village and give
the Silver Bell to the mayor, if you haven't already. Then go to Jeva's
house. Talk to Feena, then to Jeva, and have her read the Volume Hadal. Now
leave, and go back to Sara's Shop in Minea. You'll find that Sara is gone,
she'll have left a letter for you that says one of the Books of Ys is in
the abandoned Mine. It also says that she gave something important to Lair
the poet. Go see Lair in the upper-right corner of town. She'll say that, yes
Sara gave her something to give to you, but that you must first find her
Silver Harmonica. This is also in the Mine.
From here, buy a Katana from the Weapon Shop and equip it. Also buy a Wing
from Pim. The next dungeon, the Mine, is VERY annoying and you want to have
the Wing with you in case you get lost (The Wing allows you to instantly
return to any town you've previously visited). I also use it to simply exit
from a point in the Mine, so MAKE SURE YOU BUY ONE!! When you're ready, go
outside and follow the path to the big tree again, but this time go up and
right from it.

        Subsubsection 2: To the Mine!
            Objective a: Mine Depth 1
Items to Acquire: Timer Ring, Silver Armor, Heal Potion

Okay, before we begin this Mine I would STRONGLY advise you to MAKE A
MAP!! I'll try to guide you through this as best I can but having a map never
hurts. Are you ready? Then let's begin.
Enter the Mine. We'll call this Point A. Just follow the wall to the left.
Just keeep following the upper wall, which will eventually become the left
wall, through all the dead ends, twists and turns. Eventually you should come
to a treasure chest containing the Timer Ring. This ring reduces the speed of
your enemies by one-half. It helps when you're trying to AVOID confrontation,
but other than that it isn't very useful.
In any case, continue following the wall. Ignore the small niches when
you're following the wall and the wall is to your south (The first one is
nothing, and the second one is a door which you'll return to later. Mark it
Point B.). You'll
eventually come to a treasure chest at the top of a passage, and this chest
will contain Silver Armor. Equip it.
CONTINUE following the wall, and you'll eventually end up back at Point A.
At this point you may want to go outside and stand still to recover your HP
(Watch out for the dog near there).. When it's full, go back into the Mine.
Begin following the upper wall again, but when the path starts leading south
go and follow the RIGHT wall instead. You'll find a chest that contains a
Heal Potion (NOTE: If you already have a Heal Potion in your Inventory, then
your HP will be instantly refilled. If you already have full HP, the Potion
gets wasted. So if you have full HP and a Heal Potion, ignore the chest for
now).
Now follow the lower wall, and you'll eventually end up at Point B. This
time, go through the door and follow the path to Mine Depth 2.

            Objective b: Mine Depth 2
Items to Acquire: Heal Ring, Silver Harmonica, Roda Tree Seed

Okay, when you get to Mine Depth 2, follow the upper wall to your right,
then go down the path when you can't go right anymore. Look to your left when
the path opens up. See that enemy guarding the door? KILL HIM!! Then go
through the door, and open the chest. It contains the Heal Ring. Okay,
remember how you would slowly regain HP whenever you stood still outside?
Well, with this ring equipped you can stand still ANYWHERE and automatically
recover HP (Except, again, during Boss fights)! Sweeeeeet! :) And you can
use it all you want too! *Dancing around* However, it serves no purpose in
battle, so once you're done healing, reequip another ring (I prefer the Power
Ring).
Go back through the door and go down and to the right until you see the
path split into three. Take the center route and go down when you can. Follow
the left wall to the treasure chest. Open it to get the Silver Harmonica.
Continue to follow the wall and take the path to the door. Just before the
door you'll see a chest. You should know what to do with chests by now silly!
Take the Roda Tree Seed from inside.
Now, USE THE WING! Warp back to Minea Town, and get ready for your next
objective.
            Objective c: The Volume Toba
Items to Acquire: Reflex-Armor, Large Shield (You'll see why later), Volume
Toba, Silver Sword, Wing

Now we're back in Minea Town. Go to the Armor Shop and buy a suit of
Reflex-Armor and a Large Shield. Now I know what you're thinking. You're
thinking, "Hey MORON, I have better equipment than this already! Why the
*&(*&)_ should I waste 12,000 Gold on this stuff?!" Just trust me, you'll
thank me for it later. DO NOT Equip the items if you've bought them, just
know you'll need them later on. If you don't have enough Gold for both items
at this point, don't worry about it, but make sure you buy them at some
point.
Now go visit Lair again, and give her her Silver Harmonica. She'll play
you a song and then give you the Volume Toba and 500 Experience Points (You
should gain about 3-4 Levels from this).
Go back outside and to the big bushy tree I've mentioned several times.
Touch its southern side, and... IT'S TALKING! AHH! :P It's the Roda Tree
you've heard about, and it'll tell you where to find the Silver Sword.
Go just to the right of the bridge, and walk straight down until you see
ANOTHER big bushy tree. Walk up to ITS southern side and..IT TALKS TOO! EEK!
:P When it's done, you'll finally receive the Silver Sword. Equip it.
Before going back into the Mine, get enough Gold to buy another Wing, and
do so. Again, it always helps to have one when dealing with this dungeon.
When you're ready, go back down to Mine Depth 2, but DON'T move from
near the stairs.

            Objective d: Mine Depth 3
Items to Acquire: Darm Key, Heal Potion, Volume Dabbie

Still with me? Good. :) It's now safe to move from the stairs. Just go
left, then down, then right a bit, and the stairs to Mine Depth 3 will be
above you. Go down them.
This floor is pretty easy really. Just follow the lower wall to the right.
Continue following it when it twists and turns and you'll eventually get to
a chest. This contains the Darm Key. Continue to follow the wall and you'll
come to a second chest, which contains a Heal Potion (Heal Potions are fairly
useless now, because you have the Heal Ring, but it's always nice to know you
have a quick heal when you need it.). Follow the wall all the way, and you'll
arrive at a big door. If you're at Level 16 and have the full lineup of
Silver Equipment (Sword, Shield, and Armor), you're ready for the next
challenge. Save the game and go inside the door.
You'll see a treasure chest. Try to take it, and you'll get attacked by the
Vampire Bats. Defeat them/it and claim your prizes: 500 Experience Points
(Enough for another few Levels Up) and The Volume Dabbie. Celebrate. You can
take a look at the room to the upper-left of the Boss chamber but I don't
really think it does anything. Now fight your way out of the Mine, or just
use the Wing.

    Subsection C: Darm Tower..Book I's Climax
        Subsubsection 1: Preparations
Items to Acquire: Large Shield, Reflex-Armor (If you haven't yet), Heal
Potion (Optional but helpful if you're surrounded by enemies and can't use
the Heal Ring)

If you have 3 Books of Ys, 6 keys, and the full lineup of Silver Equipment,
you're ready for the longest dungeon to date--Darm Tower (NOTE: I KNOW the
manual for the game says you have to find the first 5 Books before entering
Darm Tower. But the manual is a drooling moron, as evidenced by the fact that
it called the first town Esteria. Just ignore it.).
But first you have to make some preparations. Go back to Jeva's house in
Zeptic Village and have her read you the Volumes Toba and Dabbie. When you
leave, she'll tell you to go see Goban the Bandit, and he'll open the way
to Darm Tower for you.
Before doing that, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE REFLEX-ARMOR AND LARGE SHIELD!
This is YOUR LAST CHANCE to buy them before entering the tower. If you don't
have them, go back to Minea Town and buy them. You may also want to invest in
a Heal Potion.
When you're ready for Darm Tower, go to the right of the Shrine, take the
upper path, and cross the bridge. Go inside the building (Feel free to talk
to the guy outside the building as well), and meet Goban. He'll give you a
brief lesson on Darm Tower, and wish you luck on your trek.
You'll now be in a tunnel of sorts, and you'll notice that you can't go
back to the Mountains. It's forward or nowhere now, so you may as well go
forward. Go through the door and enter...Darm Tower.
(NOTE: Once you enter the tunnel [And Darm Tower for that matter], YOU
CANNOT LEAVE! You can push either door, and push and push, but they won't
budge. MAKE SURE you're ready before going to talk to Goban)

        Subsubsection 2: Darm Tower FB1-9
Items to Acquire: Heal Potion, Mirror, Evil Ring, Eagle Idol, Blue Necklace,
Silver Sword (THIS IS NOT A TYPO!), Silver Shield (Neither is this), Hammer,
Volume Messa
(NOTE: For Darm Tower, I will skip lines between the paragraphs in order to
denote different floors)

You should now be in the first floor of Darm Tower. You can either go
left to get to Floor B1--it serves no purpose now, but make a note of it--or
right and down. Follow the path and go up midway through the hallway to get
to Floor 3, or go all the way to the right and up to get to Floor 2. For
now, take the right stairway..

You notice you're now on the outside of the tower. You can either go left
or right to get to your destination; Just take the next door you see. You're
now on Floor 2. The main path leads nowhere, but see those two enemies
guarding a door? TERMINATE THEM!! Then go through the door to collect 3
treasure chests (One is opened; You'll see several of these throughout Darm
Tower. Don't worry about it). From left to right, they contain: A Heal
Potion, a Mirror (Paralyzes enemies, but can break if you use it too many
times), and the Evil Ring. DO NOT equip the Evil Ring, at least not yet. You
use it later on but for now equipping it will only cause you a swift death.
Leave and go back to Floor 1, then up to Floor 3.

On the third floor, follow the path until you get to the gargoyle statues
(Yes that's what they are). Then use the Mask of Eyes. Another secret door!
Go through and take off the Mask of Eyes. Go left and talk to the guy, who
will tell you to go find his Eagle Idol and buddy Colin. Leave the room
(Again using the Mask of Eyes), and go through the rest of the path. Take
the stairs up to Floor 4.

Floor 4 doesn't contain anything important. Just take the main path up
to the fifth floor--if you're wondering, the other door you pass along the
way leads to an opened treasure chest.

Floor 5 contains to paths leading to Floor 6. Just go all the way to the
left and take that path (You'll only be able to go one way when you get
outside.).

When you first enter Floor 6's left path, you'll see a flash of light,
then notice you're in a prison! And that's not the worst of it. Take a look
at your Equipment...ALL THE SILVER EQUIPMENT IS MISSING!! Aren't you glad
you bought the Reflex-Armor and Large Shield when I told you to? If you
didn't...well that'll teach you to ignore me, won't it? :P Anyway, you're in
a prison on Floor B1. Talk to your cellmate and he'll introduce himself as
Luta Gemma. Then take a walk around the walls of the cell. Suddenly the wall
will break down and a man will appear! Talk to him and he'll give you the
Eagle Idol. Then exit through the newly formed hole in the wall.

Go back to Floor 3, to that secret door you got into using the Mask of Eyes.
Talk to the man again, and he'll give you the Blue Necklace, which wards
off the destructive power of the Evil Ring (Don't Equip the Ring yet though;
it serves no purpose for now). Go into your Inventory and EQUIP THE BLUE
NECKLACE! Leave the room.

Go back up to the 6th floor, the same way you did before. This time you'll
be allowed entry ASSUMING you put the Blue Necklace on. If not, you'll find
yourself back in the prison on Floor B1. If this happens, get out the same
way you did before. If you talk to the man who breaks you out he gives a
fairly funny comment. This serves no other real purpose though. Just follow
the path to the 7th floor.

On Floor 7, follow the main path. The first door you come across leads to
Floor 8, so make a note of it. Through the second door the man who broke
you out of prison tells of an item you'll need later on. Continue following
the path until you come to a THIRD door. Take it and follow THAT path,
taking the branch-off to the right, to receive the Silver Sword. Again.
You should know what to do with superior items by now, so I'll just leave it
at that (Equip it, silly! This is the last time I'll tell you.). Now go back
and take the stairs to Floor 8.

On the eighth floor, you can go right, then up to Floor 9, or follow the main
path. When the path splits, go left and you'll eventually come to a big door
that leads to a boss. Make a note of this, then go back to the stairs to
Floor 9 and take them.

Take the left path (The lower left door) on Floor 9, and go down and right.
Just follow the path to the right, ELIMINATING (Let's see how many different
ways I can say "Kill" in this guide :P) the enemy guarding the door. Go
through and get the Silver Shield from the treasure chest (NOTE: At this
point, the statues near the chest will come to life and attack you. Clint
Dyer says to use the Mirror at this point, But I don't really think it's
necessary. By the way this is a decent place to build a few levels for now.).
Build up your levels to about 22, and when you're ready, go back to Floor 8.

What you have to do now should be obvious. Go fight the Boss! Go through the
big door, and Save the game. Now try to go through the smaller door. You'll
be attacked by Scyther the Pokemon (If that's not what he is, YOU tell me
what the *()&*&)& I should call him.). Beat him and you'll get a quick 750
Experience Points. Then go through the smaller door, and get the two chests.
They contain a Hammer (Which is used later on), and the Volume Messa. That's
your fourth Book of Ys! Woo! Celebrate if you'd like. Then get back to
business and go back up to Floor 9.

Take the path you took before, but this time go down when the path splits in
several directions. This leads to Floor 10.

        Subsubsection 3: Darm Tower F10-16
Items to Acquire: Brooch, Volume Gemma, Silver Armor, Battle Shield, Glasses

You're now on Floor 10 of Darm Tower. When the path splits in two, go up
to get to Floor 11. Outside the tower, Equip the Hammer in your Inventory
and use it on the third pillar from the left of the door. It'll shatter. Now
continue going left and through the door there. Talk to the man standing
there. It's Luta Gemma! He'll tell you that a girl is being held somewhere
in the tower, and that her life is in danger. Go back to Floor 10.

Back on Floor 10, take the lower path, and take the left door when it
splits. Then go right when the path branches off. This'll lead you to
the other part of Floor 11.

On the eleventh floor, take a moment to admire the strange wallpaper. :)
Ignore the first door you see, and just take the main path to Floor 12.
In case you're wondering, had you not smashed the pillar on Floor 10, weird
music would play in this room and you'd steadily lose HP until you just died.
In the first door you came to would've been the guy who gave you the Blue
Necklace, and he would've told you basically to destroy the pillar so he
could escape. He'd then refill your HP. But you already destroyed the pillar,
so... :)

Nothing much to do on Floor 12, Just go down, and when the path splits, go
down, and then left to Floor 13.

Floor 13 will be very annoying later on, but for now just go right and up
and talk to the guy you gave the Eagle Idol to. He'll tell you the exact
location of the captive girl. Now just go back to the start of the floor
(Which isn't far), and go left and up to Floor 14.

Just follow the main path, and you'll eventually come to another boss
(Save the game. This is the last time I'll tell you to save before a boss,
as it should be obvious by now). If you're Level 24 or above, try and go
through the little door in his room, and you'll be attacked by The Boulder
(I was completely at a loss on this one). Beat him to receive 1000 Experience
Points. Now go through the little door, and pick up the Brooch, and the
Volume Gemma. Yesss! That's 5 out of 6 Books! Dance around a little. If
you're at that age where you have a crush on a cute guy or girl, you may
want to call them up and ask them out now (Heck, now's as good a time as
any). Then brace yourself to head back down to Floor 13, and...the Mirror
Maze (Dun Dun DUN!!!!).

Actually it's not as tough as I remember it being (Of course the first
time I tried to get through it without mapping it). To start, go down and
right to the first mirror, and walk into it.
Keep going down, and when the path splits, go right. When it splits again,
go left, and just keep going left and down until you come to another mirror.
Walk into it.
Just go left and down and walk into a third mirror.
From there, walk down, right, and up to touch Mirror #4.
ERADICATE the guy guarding the chest, and grab the Silver Armor. Then
touch the mirror. You'll find yourself back at the start of the maze.
Go through the first mirror again, and take the first path split again. Take
two doors down and go into the mirror before you.
Just take the right mirror here.
Now take the mirror immediately above you.
Now just go right and up to Floor 15. That wasn't so bad, was it? :)

Not much to do on Floor 15, really. Go down, left, down, and down the left
path to get the Battle Shield. Then go back up and through the door you saw
earlier to go to Floor 16.

You HAVE to go left to actually get inside Floor 16. Once there, just
follow the main path for now (Don't take the door leading up). You'll
eventually end up on a catwalk. Go all the way to the left, and follow
the main path inside. Careful--there are some very quick moving enemies
in this path, and you may want to use the Time Ring to reduce your chances
of slamming into one. When you get to the door, Equip the Evil Ring and it
will open. Go inside and...it's Lair! She looks quite pretty in the
moonlight (But not as pretty as you Jess! :) ). She'll explain who locked her
here, and how to defeat him. She'll also give you a pair of Glasses that will
allow you to read the Books of Ys on your own. Once you've done that, go all
the way back to the beginning of the floor, taking the upper door you didn't
earlier. It leads to Floor 17.

        Subsubsection 3: Darm Tower F17-25
Items to Acquire: Heal Potion, Battle Armor, Flame Sword, Blue Amulet,
Volume Fact

On Floor 17, you may want to Equip the Armor Ring, because you WILL get
hit on this floor, quite a bit in fact. Take the right path, and go up
the first chance you get to grab a Heal Potion and refill your HP. Go
back to the path you were on and continue left and up to Floor 18.

Reequip your favorite ring and go all the way down. Then go right and up
to Floor 19.

Equip the Blue Necklace in your Inventory amd just follow the path to the
Battle Armor. If you don't have the Blue Necklace equipped you'll get warped
back to earlier in the floor JUST before you get to the chest. When you get
it, go back to Floor 18 (Thank to Clint Dyer for showing exactly how to get
this).

Now go all the way left and up to Floor 20. :)

Just follow the path on Floor 20 UNTIL you see the wall break. Then go
inside the hole. VAPORIZE the enemies guarding the chest and claim the Flame
Sword as your own. Then go back out the hole and continue following the path
to Floor 21.

The twenty-first floor is...another Mirror Maze! Oh no! But this one is
actually easier than the first one. Just walk to the first mirror and touch
it (Careful..an enemy will attack you from below in this room. If you're not
careful you CAN die.).
Now take the lower right path, and go through the mirror at the end.
  Take the left mirror now.
Just follow the path through the door and mirror. You should now be in a
boss room. If you're not at Level 31, go back through the mirror.
Take the upper left path, and then go down and right to the mirror. Walk
into it.
Now just go left, up, and right and into the mirror at the end of the path.
You'll find yourself back before the first mirror. You can repeat this loop
to earn Experience Points. If you'd like you can just stay in between the
first two mirrors (On the lower right path I mentioned earlier) and get
Experience there. Once you're at level 31, or even a little stronger, go
back to the first mirror and follow the path mentioned above. Do the
usual routine and you'll come to Twinhead. Beat him and the little door
will open and you'll get 1500 Experience Points. Go up the stairs and try to
go through the big door and...ARRRRGH! IT DOESN'T OPEN! You won't actually
die from touching the door (No matter how many times you try, you can only
drain yourself to 3 HP.), but it's obvious it's not going to open. So now we
have to go to see our friend Luta Gemma.

Go ALL THE WAY back to Floor 11. I outlined how to get out of the Floor 21
Mirror Maze above, and here's how to get through the one on Floor 13.
Take the mirror you see before you. Now take the left path, and then the
bottom left path. Go through the mirror you see, and you should be out. The
next time you have to go through to get back up, you can skip the entire
sequence to grab the Silver Armor.

Go back to Luta Gemma, and he'll give you a quick history lesson and the
Blue Amulet. Now go back to Floor 21.

Again, you'll want to build levels until you're at about Level 35, or
even 36 if you want a REALLY good chance of moving on. Go through the Mirror
Maze again and this time, the big door will open. Equip the Silver Equipment
(Trust me on this one. For more details see my Boss Guide.) and go through
the door.

Here you are, on the twenty-fifth floor of Darm Tower. Go around the
platform and down, and step on the amulet-shaped inscription in the floor,
to be taken to your final foe in Book I: Dark Fact.
When you beat him, you'll acquire the Volume Fact. That's the sixth Book!
First, read the other five books (Just use them), and then read the Volume
Fact (Reading the first five isn't NECESSARY, but it helps if you want to
know what the Volume Fact is talking about.). Adol will be consumed in
light....

Section IV: Why this is the Final Update

Well as the title of this section would imply, I will not be updating this
guide again. The main reason, besides my laziness, is this: My brother and I
received a Dreamcast for Christmas of '99 (Yes I know it was 6 months ago).
In order to hook it up, one of the systems in the family room had to go.
Unfortunately, that system was the TurboDuo. Now you're probably saying, "But
Emptyeye, don't you have other TVs?" And the answer is yes. The problem was,
one of the TVs had no VCR accompanying it (The Duo was hooked to a VCR using
A/V cables), and the other would simply have been too difficult to move (The
room it's in is a mess. Really.). And lastly, Bruplex came by my house in May
and took back the system and game. So I guess that's it (No I'm not emulating
the game. My comp probably couldn't handle it anyway. *.*).
As I ride off into the sunset on this particular game, I'd like to thank
Tarkaan (tarkaan@bigfoot.com) for picking up the FAQ writing crown where I
dropped it. He is currently writing a Walkthrough for Book II of the game,
and I'm confident that his guide can help you through the second part of the
game just as well (If not better) as mine (Hopefully :) ) helped you through
Book I.
And I'd just like to point out that tomorrow (7/2/00) will be Jess and I's 1
month anniversary. :) I'm honestly not sure what relevance that has to the
guide, but I mentioned it up top, so... I love her!

In the words of Geddy Lee of Rush: "Thank you very kindly! Good night!"
